Ledger’s Lafayette & Seely’s Sasquatch
Musing on the Twilight Language. Sometimes, I must blog about the Fortean and the anomalistic, as it applies to current events. I need to move these thoughts along, so for those looking for something strictly zoological or cryptozoological, you might wish to skip this one. For those who allow yourself to go down this path with me, here goes…. This morning Craig posted news items on reports of Bigfoot or Sasquatch being tracked in Wisconsin. One aspect of the story that may have whizzed by you is the twilight language; the name game is part of the account. Did you [...]
Martian Bigfoot?
The newly rediscovered photograph of a Bigfoot-like image on the planet Mars is getting a lot of humor-filled play in the media. We might as well talk about it here too. I just saw CNN laugh their way through a report on it. (“So that’s why there’s been no reports of Bigfoot from Tibet. He’s on Mars.” And “Oh, it’s not Bigfoot. It’s a woman.”) Anyway, here is the photo, along with some others that appear to not show the Bigfoot image. Thoughts? That is an odd rock near it, that’s for sure. The wider view shows how small or [...]
10,000 B.C.: Cryptofiction?
You have got to love the mammoths! And sabertoothed tigers! What elements of narrative cryptofiction, in which these animals, as well as the hominids, are shown as surviving late into protohistorical times in 10,000 B.C. overlap with our interests? Frankly, I always find it intriguing and instructive to see how artists, filmmakers, and scientists recreate Pleistocene animals, so as to give us a clue of what might be behind some cryptids. I look forward to this movie, therefore, for just such images. I guess there are other things to watch in this film too, with regard to our ancestors. However, [...]
What Is The Future Image of Bigfoot?
What is in store for the next twenty years of Bigfoot? What visual imagery does the next generation have in mind for Bigfoot? What can we learn from the past recent history of the appearances of Sasquatch about the future look of the hairy hominoids? Twenty years ago, one movie changed the image of Bigfoot. During the previous twenty years, from 1967 through 1987, the psychological and visual Bigfoot was the one seen in the Patterson-Gimlin footage, that of a zaftig (indeed, quite zaftik) female Bigfoot walking along a sandbar in the forest. From 1987 through today, while the P-G [...]
Grendel: Another View
Cryptozoology pitches a large enough tent to encompass many different folks who hold varied opinions, happily, side by side. One notion of Grendel, that of a specific line of thinking has it that Grendel was a surviving hairy hominoid, a Neandertaloid, or perhaps even a relict form of Homo heildelbergensis. Harry Trumbore’s image of Grendel (above) is from The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates and captures one version of the hominological view. How about another opinion? Today, the author of Shadows of Existence, cryptozoologist Matt Bille shares his insights in this commentary about Grendel: Cryptozoologists have speculated [...]
Pucabob Reviews Monster of the Woods
Monster in the Woods stars Jana Regan and Seth Holbrook as the two cryptozoologists. They do an excellent job, as do several members of the cast. My surprise cameo nearly begins the film, I discovered. Now after seeing the entire production, I highly recommend this new indie motion picture as being good clean fun. Maine anomalist Jim Boyd (a/k/a “Pucabob”) has this instant review to share online about the opening of Monster of the Woods, directed by Andy Davis and Olin Smith, and executive produced by John Lane: I attended the premier of “Monster in the Woods,” a Maine-made low-budget [...]
Classic Yeti Images
With the death of Sir Edmund Hillary and Yeti images of the photographs from that era (1950s and 1960s), insights into the evolution of how the Abominable Snowmen were viewed can be considered through the lenses of time and distance. The first image shared here (click on Perkins Yeti) is the 1960 lifesize drawing shown by then-Lincoln Park Zoo director Marlin Perkins before the World Book expedition to the Himalayas with Sir Edmund Hillary. (This may be different than the large cutout Perkins showed on “Wild Kingdom” in 1963, or it may be the same one.) Below is the slightly [...]
My Favorite Hillary & Yeti Photo
The tributes to Sir Edmund Hillary continue to roll in from afar, a fact acknowledged in today’s New York Times. The man’s reach was far indeed. In Portland, Maine, the local newspaper recalled Sir Edmund visited here in 1962, and gave a lecture for teachers and school children at the-then-grand Lafayette Hotel on his Abominable Snowman expedition. As a final goodbye to Sir Edmund Hillary, I want to share my favorite photograph of him. It is Hillary with an unknown artist’s drawing of the Abominable Snowman that Hillary loved to show to the media before his 1960 expedition. To prepare [...]
Bigfoot at the Merrill
Saturday, January 12, 2008, the world premiere showing of the new indie film, Monster in the Woods will occur at Merrill Auditorium in Portland, Maine. Built in 1912 to replace two former halls both destroyed by fire, the (Portland, Maine) City Hall Auditorium was a classic example of colonial style, boasting porticos and columns, a deep court and large wings. The hall was completely renovated beginning in January 1996, and today, the re-named Merrill Auditorium is a 1900 seat performing arts facility, located in the remarkable setting of downtown Portland, on the beautiful coast of Maine. The plot of Monster [...]
