The above creature was last seen on drive-in screens in the film Zontar, the Thing From Venus. Movie producer Edwin Tobolowsky, 86, died on July 29, 2006. He was well-known for his involvement in motion pictures dealing with creatures based very loosely, in some cases, on cryptozoological themes or "cryptozoocinema." Above is the ancient thing from Creature of Destruction. The sci-fi movie concerns a mad stage hypnotist Dr. John Basso who “reverts” his beautiful assistant Doreena into the physical form of a prehistoric sea monster “she was in a past life.” The plot for Curse of the Swamp Creature takes [...]
Dr. Carrington of The Thing Dies
The mad scientist, Dr. Carrington, in the 1951 Howard Hawks’ horror thriller, The Thing, has died. The Los Angeles Times reports that Robert Cornthwaite, 89, “a character actor whose more than 50-year career in theater, films and television included roles in classic thrillers and thrilling classics…died of natural causes Thursday (July 20, 2006) at the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills.” The “Thing” turned out to be a creature frozen in a block of ice, and in many ways, foreshadowed the Minnesota Iceman. There are several differences, of course, such as alleged origin and the [...]
“Mysterious & Kooky”
Strange Maine’s Michelle Souliere has written an excellent, in-depth July 20th blog reviewing the Bates Museum of Art’s show. Her long critique “Cryptozoology Exhibit: Mysterious & Kooky” has many photos of the art and shares her good insights. It is merely one of those wonderful coincidences that I just posted something this morning about Marc Swanson’s sculpture that is located in this show. As fate would have it, what would appear in the blogsphere but Michelle with Swanson’s Yeti at Bates: Michelle starts off her review by taking us, with her husband, along on her trek… Tristan and I decided [...]
Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life
When I first saw the notice of Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life coming back into print, I had emotions that ranged from joy and sadness, to caution and upset. I was happy to know that a whole new generation of cryptozoologists would be able to read Ivan T. Sanderson’s book. Sorrow nevertheless hit me. I was hoping to see the book reprinted in a high-quality hardback edition, as a celebration of the early days of Sanderson’s discovery of the diversity of unknown hairy hominoids. Afterall this is Ivan T. Sanderson we are talking about, the person who actually coined [...]
Them! and Skullduggery: The Bridge to Johor
Sometimes I start one place, go down a side road, end up elsewhere, and find my way back to say goodbye. The 1950s-1960s movie and television character actor Christian Drake, who played Trooper Ed Blackburn in the classic 1954 film Them!, has died at the age of 82. Is it a coincidence that I just flipped on my television to catch the last hour of this movie on cable? Bizarre! The film Them! was directed by Gordon Douglas, who would later be the director for Skullduggery, a fascinating 1970 cryptozoology film about the Tropi (pictured below), bipedal hairy hominoids, which [...]
Remembering Grover
Grover Krantz is remembered for many things, perhaps mostly by Cryptomundo readers for his research captured in the pages of Bigfoot Sasquatch: Evidence. To me, of all the guys I’ve met, he may have been one of the sweetest, most down-to-earth men searching for Bigfoot, despite an overblown counter-reputation for being sharp and fierce. To know Grover, as a person, was to truly like him. Grover Krantz, during the 1970s. Through face-to-face encounters, phone calls, and emails, Grover and I kept in contact for many years. I tried to capture his life in various places, such as the brief biographical [...]

Entertainment Insiders announced that actor Matt Lattimore, 45, has died of undisclosed causes on June 4, 2006. He was born March 24, 1961, in Long Beach, California, and lived and worked in California most of his life. The star of over 25 television commercials, Lattimore also acted in five motion pictures, including the lead role of Roger Gordon in Sasquatch Hunters (2005) and as a major in Hunter’s Moon (2006). The original title for Sasquatch Hunters was Primeval. The plot involves the adventures of forest rangers and scientists who go on an archaeological dig for fossils in a Bigfoot burial [...]
Lyle Stuart, Frank Edwards’ Publisher, Dies on June 24th
June 24th has seen the passing of publisher Lyle Stuart, above. When I wrote on June 22nd of the "Wonders of St. John’s Day," I observed that some prominent writers and researchers had died on June 24th. The date that is generally remembered today as the "birthday of flying saucers" (June 24, 1947) has historically been the focus of many strange events, from Bigfoot sightings to Chupacabras encounters too. Acknowledging the deaths of various phenomena writers and fans, I mentioned Frank Scully in 1964; Frank Edwards in 1967; Arthur Bryant in 1967; Richard Church in 1967; Willy Ley in 1969; [...]
Narrator of The Legend of Loch Ness Dies
Arthur Franz, a character actor whose voice will forever be remembered as the narrator of The Legend of Loch Ness, died at St. John’s Hospital in Oxnard, California, of heart failure and emphysema, on June 17, 2006, at the age of 86. The film was a 1976 documentary on the famed Scottish Lake Monsters, Nessie. Franz was earlier best known for his role in Invaders from Mars (1953). Franz, who lived in New Zealand until the last month or so, had been in failing health for some time and wanted to spend his remaining days in California. Franz also played [...]
Karl Pflock’s Official Obituary
When it was learned that Karl Pflock died recently, Cryptomundo noted his passing due to the fact he had, now and then, skeptically also tackled a few cryptozoological topics. I had corresponded with Karl during his life, and I wanted to note his departure from the scene. I have since, again, heard from his widow, who sends a formal obituary to be published here, so exacting details can be shared properly. We express our sympathies to Karl’s family, once again. Mary Martinek emails along the following: Karl Tomlinson Pflock 06 January 1943 — 05 June 2006 PFLOCK — Karl T. [...]
