Of course, the criteria for making the cut via the complex gathering described here will not apply to the cryptids seen, photographed – such as this unknown ape above in Florida – but not taken. Will it become the new yardstick of the future? The Catalogue of Life, available on CD and on the Internet (www.catalogueoflife.org), is the result of a worldwide collaboration involving so far about 50 contributing databases and the work of 3,000 biologists. The project plans to cover all estimated 1.75 million known species by 2011. The project is led by the University of Reading’s Professor Frank [...]
Thoreau: Listen For New Species
I understand he wasn’t talking about “new species” in the same way that cryptozoologists do, but this thoughtful quote for the day speaks to how we have to “listen” as well as “look.” The air is full of birds, and as I go down the causeway, I distinguish the seringo note. You have only to come forth each morning to be surely advertised of each newcomer into these broad meadows. Many a larger animal might be concealed, but a cunning ear detects the arrival of each new species of bird. These birds give evidence that they prefer the fields of [...]
Rare Sumatran Striped Rabbit Photographed
The Sumatran Striped Rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri) has been captured on film, again. The appearances of the Sumatran striped rabbit are so rare that when seen in the West, many believe someone is pulling an Easter bunny joke. But indeed the appearance of one of these in the wilds of Indonesia has been breaking news at week. Here are the details and some background. In 1972, one confirmed sighting was made of what was said to be a Sumatran Striped Rabbit. The last specimen was actually collected in 1916, and was presumed extinct until photographed with the TrailMaster remotecam in 1997, [...]
Cryptozoological Nomenclature
The Minnesota Iceman. Copyright Loren Coleman 1969. French cryptozoologist Michel Raynal has passed along an interesting, but perhaps challenging to cryptozoologists, paper that has been published in Zootaxa 1409: 1–22 (2007), entitled: “Does nomenclatural availability of nomina of new species or subspecies require the deposition of vouchers in collections?” The following is the paper’s “Abstract”: Several species of birds and primates recently described opened a debate in the zoological community on the possibility of naming new species or subspecies without material onomatophores (“name-bearing types”) deposited in collections. The current writing of the Code is ambiguous in this respect. We support [...]
Shunka Warak’in’s Cultural Landscape
Remember the Shunka Warak’in? In 1995, Lance Foster, an Ioway (Hotcâgara) told me: We had a strange animal called shunka warak’in that snuck into camps at night and stole dogs. It was said to look something like a hyena and cried like a person when they killed it. Its skin is said to be kept by someone still.Lance Foster Foster, who had heard of the mounted ringdocus, thought it was an example of the shunka warak’in, which he knew of from his own experiences and those of relatives in Montana and Idaho. The present location of the mounted Shunka Warak’in [...]

What Scientists Can Do: The Real Bigfoot
The Real Bigfoot and Genuine Bigfoot Tracks Part 10: What Scientists Can Do, The Real Bigfoot, and Notes by Mark A. Hall What Scientists Can Do When scientists take up the study of Bigfoot reports, they might first rescue the neglected and misplaced bones already in museum collections. The field studies, so often considered to be science at work in the wild, need to be better prepared for than past efforts. Searching streams for tracks failed. Camping out and waiting for all the native wildlife to come to you has also failed. A lot of research should be done before [...]
Colossal Squid May Be Microwaved
Remember the news of the very large, appropriately named Colossal Squid just captured? Here’s an update, via news services, which are reporting, in part: Scientists at New Zealand’s national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, have taken possession of the beast that took fishermen two hours to land after it was netted by chance in Antarctic waters last month and was frozen soon afterward to preserve it. Expert Steve O’Shea said the squid had weighed in at 1,089 pounds and measured 33 feet long — heavier but shorter than initial estimates of 990 lbs and 39 feet. It appears to be by [...]

It is more difficult than the previous quiz: Quiz – All About Hairy The same comment guidelines apply, as with the CZ IQ quiz. Please don’t ruin the intrigue and fun for people coming after you, even months from now. So, simple rules: You post any answers, proper [...]
First Xenoglaux Seen Alive In Wild
American Bird Conservancy is reporting the first live sighting a few weeks ago of what is “considered a holy grail of South American ornithology,” Xenoglaux loweryi. Commonly called the long-whiskered owlet – alone in its own genus Xenoglaux, meaning “strange owl” – it was first discovered in 1976. Researchers have caught a few specimens in nets after dark but had not seen it in nature, until was spotted in February in a northern Peruvian rainforest. It was encountered three times during the day and its calls recorded at night in the Alto Nieva’s Peruvian reserve, known locally as the Area [...]
