John Keel was supposed to be moved on October 23 from the hospital, but didn’t get transferred to rehab until the 25th. He is receiving his cards and letters. His recovery from his heart attack that apparently occurred on Friday the 13th seems to be slow but nothing out of the ordinary. Here’s some more news from Doug Skinner: Greetings, Keel fans. I’m a friend of John’s. He’s recuperating nicely. He’s undergoing some physical therapy after his cardiac surgery, which is routine. He’s expected to be back home in a couple of weeks. I visited him yesterday, and brought him [...]
Rich Dolan Comments On “Mothman”
As a comment to my review of the “Sci-Fi Investigates” program, one of the program’s four investigators, Richard Dolan, sent in a comment to my blog. I wish to bring his insights to a higher level of blog-awareness by posting it separately today. Richard M. Dolan Hello everyone, I’d like to extend my greetings to everyone and just say that I often enjoy reading the entries in here. I agree with other commentators that the absence of John Keel on this show was very unfortunate, as was the absence of Loren Coleman. I asked the producers about getting Keel on [...]
Sci-Fi’s Mothman Non-Investigation
On October 26, 2006, "Sci-fi Investigates" broadcast their "Mothman" episode. While it had a few moments that are pure entertainment and certainly funny, it had little or nothing to do with "investigating" Mothman or unexplained phenomena. The program was a forensic failure. Eyewitnesses were interviewed, sites were visited, group discussions were recorded, and more eyewitnesses were interviewed. The archival footage was interesting, but the repeating images of the collapsed bridge and created Mothman-in-flight scenes were visibly boring after their third time through. Come on, did they run out of b-roll so quickly? Skepticism and Ridicule Are Not the Same Thing [...]
Days of Mothman Malaise
Despite strange dark clouds on the horizon, there does seem to be more promising news on 76-year-old John A. Keel’s slow recovery from his heart attack. Keel, as this Mothman time of year rapidly approaches, is recuperating nicely, still in a New York-area hospital. He may be released today or tomorrow, and then be admitted to a rehab center for a few days of physical therapy. Details are still emerging about the recent events. Figuring out an exact date for Keel’s heart attack is developing into a mystery unto itself. He apparently had a covert one a few days before [...]
Mothman and Boston Rob
Looking ahead to next Wednesday’s "Mothman" episode of "Sci-Fi Investigates," here is today’s guest blog from John Frick, one of the cofounders of the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It has little to do with cryptozoology, but much to do with how this television program approached the subject. John Frick writes: On October 25, at 10 PM Eastern is the debut of the Mothman episode of "Sci-Fi Investigates" on the Sci-Fi channel. One of the principal investigators on the show is Boston Rob from "Survivor" fame, and he represents the critic. My brother, Tim, and I, once again [...]
Keel Remains Hospitalized & Cards
John A. Keel’s treatment has taken a new turn, maybe getting one of those unplanned twists in life that he wrote about in his book, The Fickle Finger of Fate. Instead of being discharged today, Wednesday, October 18, Keel is going to remain in the hospital. He now will be in rehab for a few days before he returns home. Post-op, John Keel seems to be doing fairly well, but his recovery from his heart attack is not moving along as quickly as at first thought. If anyone wishes to send him a get-well card, he requests that people please [...]
John A. Keel Prognosis Is Good
John A. Keel in 2002, shown here during the release of The Mothman Prophecies motion picture. The news on 76-year-old John A. Keel’s recovery from his heart attack is good. Just in from Doug Skinner… I just spoke with Keel. He had the operation yesterday, but is doing fine, and is due to be released tomorrow. I’ll be meeting him at the hospital, and helping him get back home and stock up on groceries. The prognosis is good! Many thanks to confirmations and news via John Frick, Mark Pilkington, and George Hansen. To answer those that have asked: John A. [...]

Bigfoot Bounty: A Year Later
Bigfoot Bounty A year after the one million dollar short-lived bounty for a Sasquatch photo, here’s a look back. Hasbro produced this set in 1973, demonstrating a lengthy awareness by the company into Yeti hunts. During mid-October 2005, a proposed $1 million reward for a photograph of evidence leading to the live capture of Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman (Yeti) or the Loch Ness Monster was discussed by the media, and caused quite a stir. Initially, the Bigfoot Bounty was to be used to announce Creature Appreciation Week later in the month, by the producers of the Duel Masters Trading Card [...]
Mothman Producer Dies
Executive producer Barry Conrad (above, right) and his producer partner Lisa McIntosh (above, left) have been working on their documentary project about the Flatwoods Monster, Kelly Creatures, and Mothman for over five years. Their production company has completed several documentaries that have been broadcast on the Biography, A&E, Discovery, Sci-Fi and TLC channels. When the crew visited me in Portland, Maine, on April 19, 2002, they were here to interview and tape me about Mothman, my book on the topic, and the then just-released Richard Gere The Mothman Prophecies movie. They did this, intriguingly, in a live production event in [...]
