Mothman Death Curse and Firewall

Let’s take a walk on the wild side, for a moment. It is the weekend, and tonight you may be looking for a new movie to go out and see. Perhaps you’ll go to Firewall, the new flick with Harrison Ford. Ford took the last three years to create it, and there’s lots of buzz about the movie already. One of the things you will see creeping into some of the news about Firewall is the unusual mentioning of "Mothman." But why? For those that never knew, the media is reminding people that during the meandering director’s search for Firewall, [...]

Would you like to be the host of a new show on MTV about cryptozoology? Get that videotape of yourself remastered for a MTV audition. Okay. Ready. Set. Go. Your co-host could be somebody like this: MTV has put out a “casting call” that they have entitled “Do you love Monsters?” Here’s what they want: We are looking for two young Crypto enthusiasts, 18 and older, to host an upcoming fun, hip, and off the wall series that looks inside the world of cryptozoology, creatures, legends, and the people who investigate them. Reality Check: Behind The Lost World Hype

Do you know where the Foja Mountains are? Most people don’t. And are there really "hundreds of new species" discovered? Bruce Beehler of the U.S. organization Conservation International and Indonesian Institute of Sciences reportedly told the BBC: "It’s a beautiful, untouched, unpopulated forest. We found dozens, if not hundreds, of new species." The attention to the new "Lost World" in Indonesia is all over the media, as mentioned earlier here on Cryptomundo. But what’s the reality behind the headlines? Photographs of two rare but not "new" species – the long-beaked echidna and the golden-mantled tree kangeroo; Conservation International. Not to [...]

Great Bear Lake Monster

Scientific historian Will Bagley recently gave a lecture to Utah Humanities Council at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, on the the legend of the Bear Lake Monster and other aquatic creatures in Utah. The title of his January talk was “Does the Bear Lake Monster exist?” The Giant Beaver, illustration by Harry Trumbore. From The Field Guide to Lake Monsters, Sea Serpents, and Other Mystery Denizens of the Deep (Copyright 2003). Bagley mostly gave a chronological overview of the accounts, bringing to the fore, once again, the rich interwoven nature of the local history of the area with the reports [...]

Cryptomundo Wins Praise

Cryptomundo was informed this week that we have been chosen as a Yahoo Pick! We are so proud, here’s the entire posting from Yahoo: Cryptomundo Florida Skunk Apes, West Virginia Mothmen, Texas Chupacabras … rejected expansion teams for the NFL? Think again. These creatures have never been, well, verified by the stamp of science. But that doesn’t stop Cryptomundo, a site that scours the Web for news of “the most elusive and rare animals (cryptids) on this planet earth.” And it won’t stop us, either! Here, read of the mule-eared, thick-necked critter roaming the wilds of western Arkansas! Thrill to [...]

Get Ready For Yeti

Okay, all of us can see evidence that the Malaysia "Bigfoot" story has exploded into the mainstream when even USA Today decides to cover the story. But then, we also realize it is getting a little long in the tooth when the same newspaper can’t be any more creative than to use the old terrible Ivan Marx photo of a probable man-in-a-suit to illustrate their supposedly overview news item. Outrageous. Those pix from the 1970s have nothing to do with Malaysia, and little to do with the real Bigfoot! I certainly want the Malaysian scientists to succeed and find some [...]
