One of the first dinosaur names that all dino-crazy kids (myself included) learns to pronounce and links to pictures of that tiny-headed, plates-on-the-back image is the “Stegosaurus.” This is the kind of chart presently found on Strategic Transitions learning software that will soon have to be revised. Ask any kid interested in dinosaurs: Where are Stegosaurus found? The answer always has been: The American West, of course. That response is no longer true. News services from China to the USA are flashing the new discovery of a Stegosaurus in Portugal. This recent finding of the first Stegosaurus fossil in Europe [...]
Earliest Dino-Era Primate Discovered
Composite (left) and reconstructed (right) skeletons of Dryomomys szalayi, the oldest known ancestor of primates. (Credit: Bloch, et al./ PNAS) In the way of new fossil news, comes a press release from Yale, via Science Daily, discussing the origins of primates in Wyoming during the age of the dinosaurs. Well, that’s not exactly what it says, but I am merely trying to prepare you for how the media might characterize this paleontological discovery. What’s more important, perhaps, is the realization that the relationships within primates is being rewritten with every new discovery. So, for example, the new hominoid fossils that [...]
What Is A New Species?
This is the latest new mammal discovered in Europe, Mus cypriacus or the Cypriot mouse, which was described last year in the journal Zootaxa. How does one determine that a new species has been discovered? How is it that one location has one species of salamander and thirty years later there are said to be many new species in that area? From where do all the new species come? The Naung Mung Scimitar-Babbler (Jabouilleia naungmungensis) was discovered in the pre-montane rainforests of northern Myanmar (Burma) in 2005. Their discovery, however, was not announced until 2006. It is a unique new [...]
Kokako Becomes A Cryptid
Extinct? Which one? In less detailed media reports you may hear today or over the weekend, the New Zealand Ko¯kako has been declared extinct. Sad news indeed, but let’s be specific. It is not an entire species that is being declared extinct. Once again, also, there are hints that this may be another subspecies, despite recent sightings, which is being declared extinct too early. The one with the orange wattles is allegedly gone. But is it? Is the Ko¯kako the New Zealand version of the ivory-billed woodpecker? The South Island Ko¯kako is the subspecies that is now being declared extinct. [...]
Mystery Tusk: Definitely Mastodon Not Mammoth – Perhaps
This mastodon (Mammut americanum) is the life-sized bronze representation at the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, the home of the “Mastodons.” As you will recall, on the 8th, you first read here about the “Mystery Tusk.” Now comes a “confirmed” answer. Or is it? Therein lies the tale behind the splash on the television screen. The video is running on the local news this morning and WCSH-6 has run a backup item on their website by Peter Weyl. The mystery tusk was discovered by Tim Winchenbach of Cushing. He found it in a scallop net brought up from the Georges [...]
Mystery Tusk: Not A Circus Elephant
Fisherman Tim Winchenbach poses outside his home in Cushing, Maine, with a mysterious prehistoric tusk that was pulled up with a load of scallop shells on a New Bedford vessel fishing off Georges Bank in December 2006. Photos by Joel Page. Does this tusk come from a ten-thousand-years or older, long gone mammoth or mastodon? Along the coast of Maine, the news of this find has been a strange but popular story in the papers, on the local television channels, and of some note to lovers of curios and fossils. It is, needless to say, not especially cryptozoological, unless the [...]
Mystery Cayman Croc Captured
What is an eight-foot long crocodile (Crocodylus sp.) – a Mexican example is seen above – doing in the Cayman Islands? They have been extinct there for an undetermined number of years. It obviously is not someone’s escaped pet. “Mystery crocodile described as ‘very fast and aggressive’” Cayman News Thursday, January 4, 2007 The origin of an eight-foot long crocodile captured near Old Man Bay in Grand Cayman last Saturday remains a mystery. Sightings of the reptile in the north of the Island prompted 911 calls from members of the public. Police officers and officials from the Department of the [...]
Not Palm Civet But Flying Squirrel, Scientists Say
Perhaps I got it wrong? “New” Borneo Animal “Discovered” Back on December 5, 2005, I shared the news that apparently a new red-furred animal larger than a domestic cat had reportedly been discovered on Borneo, Indonesia. On December 5, 2005, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) announced that they had discovered the first new carnivore to be found in the region since the Tonkin otter-civet emerged in Vietnam in 1930. Also, the WWF said it would be the first new mammal to be specifically found on the island of Borneo since the Borneo ferret-badger in 1895. The new carnivore [...]
Bernard Heuvelmans Books
During 2007, two books, one about and one by Bernard Heuvelmans, will be published in French, appearing by late February from the publisher Les Editions de l’Oeil du Sphinx, Paris. Barloy is also involved as the annotator of Heuvelmans’ forthcoming books. Jean-Luc Rivera is the director of the publishing of the Heuvelmans collection of books, Bibliothèque Heuvelmansienne (Heuvelmansian Library). The collection’s first volume – which has never been published before – is Les Félins Encore Inconnus d’Afrique (The Felines Still Unknown [...]
More African Dino Art Deco
Friday, the one-two punch of Boing Boing and The Anomalist featuring my blog on “African Dinosaur Hunting: Art Deco Style,” got the story/link repeated and viewed far and wide. Some of the locations were very diverse: Professor Hex, Lesley at The Debris Field , Africa Art History, Spooky Paradigm, Planet Kwekje, Weird History, Zapptor, Kung Fu Action Theatre, Frederick County Report, and many others. Yes, I did listen to you regarding a desire to read the newsprint. It is difficult to do, from the jpegs of Art Deco African dinosaur hunting articles shared earlier, so here below you will find [...]
