Friday, the one-two punch of Boing Boing and The Anomalist featuring my blog on “African Dinosaur Hunting: Art Deco Style,” got the story/link repeated and viewed far and wide. Hunting a Live Prehistoric Monster

Now a new hunt is on. Apparently, vintage souvenirs of Art Deco dinos were produced over 90 years ago. Little remembered today is the fact that dinosaur popularity began early in the 20th century. Indeed, at the British Natural History Museum in 1925, to meet the demands of children visitors who wanted their “own,” the institution began to make souvenir dinosaur models of the ones on display. Above (top) is shown Hilda Bather, daughter of Francis Arthur Bather, Keeper of Geology, who offered this set of seven dinosaur models for sale. I hear some still exist. (Needless to say, how these dinosaurs appeared in this art influenced what the early cryptozoologists thought they were seeking in Africa.)
