Bigfooter Allen Foster takes a peek at the latest episode about reports of hairy hominoids in Malaysia on Destination Truth: The “team” went to Malaysia to find Bigfoot. The leader, Josh Gates, interviewed the Malaysia’s leading Bigfoot researcher, Vincent Chow. Then they went to a local town near the last reported sighting and interviewed witnesses. Off into the jungle they went to where the latest sighting was. The team found a possible footprint and made a cast of it. The footprint was irregular in shape but did look like a possible print. They had one of their night vision cameras [...]
Krantz Is Dead: Comment to Anthropologist Hawks
John Hawks, (Ph.D., 1999) an anthropologist in the Department of Anthropology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, writes a popular blog on all subjects he feels impact on anthropology. His contributions are usually intelligent and look at various sides of anthropological debates. However, once in a blue moon, usually with tongue-in-cheek, Hawks writes about Bigfoot-related items, such as his take on the 2005 Texas conference. Intriguingly, the way most cryptozoologically-oriented students find their way to Hawks is when they search for information on Gigantopithecus, as he noted in 2006, here. Now his newest assault on hominology is about how Bigfooters have brought back [...]
Loren & Loch Ness on Video
Someone has uploaded parts of the History Channel’s recent repeat of an episode of “Deep Sea Detectives” featuring great archival footage of recent cryptozoological discoveries, the program’s hosts diving at Loch Ness, and yours truly in my home-research office-museum. Corrective footnote: Yes, I know that Loch Ness is six miles from the ocean, although I misspoke during one of the tapings, and too quickly said “mile” instead of “a few miles.” I do get excited in these interviews to try to share my down-to-earth passion for the topic. For more on this subject see: The Field Guide to Lake Monsters, [...]
Men in Cryptozoology: Blake Mathys
Blake Mathys was born in Ohio on May 31, 1980. On June 17th of that same year, a local Ohio farmer saw a hairy creature at the end of a field. The next day, 17 inches-long footprints were found in a wet area in the woods near where the creature had been standing. Blake’s uncle, Donald Mathys, made a plaster cast of one of those footprints. Blake grew up hearing the stories of that birthyear incident. He also would look often through a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about the sightings and footprint discoveries, which occurred around Logan and Union Counties [...]
Destination Truth: An Unreview
Why have there been no reviews of the June 6th broadcast of “Destination Truth,” which was hosted by Josh Gates? Where are the reviews? Did you see it? For me, it happened right in the middle of a week of activities that centered on my son’s awards assemblies and graduation, so I missed it. Did anyone watch it? The limited, six-episodes of the sixty-minute long series are being carried on the Sci-Fi Channel. It is executive produced by Neil and Michael Mandt for their Mandt Brothers Productions, whose credits include ESPN’s very popular “Jim Rome Is Burning” show. If you [...]
New Encounters with Mande Burung (Wild Jungle People)
If you look in my book, The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates (NY: Anomalist Books, 2006), you will find range maps for some of the types of hairy hominoids that the data gathers. Some have tried to revise these maps, for example, for the “Erectus Hominids,” by expanding the range into the vast outback desert of Australia or cutting back the range from more certain Asia. It does not really matter because new reports and discovered old cases will keep changing what people feel are the ranges of any of these hominoid cryptids. The reports will speak [...]
Six Rules of Bigfoot Research
Blake Mathys has been a Bigfoot researcher for decades, from his days of being in the woods of the Midwest, investigating as a kid growing up in Ohio. Currently, he is studying for his Ph. D. in wildlife biology. As I write this, he is presently on his sixth trip to Bermuda, collecting further data on the native birds from that island for his dissertation. Blake Mathys shares his following “Six Rules of Bigfoot Research” for feedback and critiques. Six Rules of Bigfoot Research The following “Six Rules of Bigfoot Research” are meant to improve the quality of the evidence [...]
New Indian “Bigfoot” Reports
A researcher measures a footprint thought to be that of “Bigfoot.” Villagers in Garo hills claim to have sighted mythical giant “Gigantic, hairy, ape-like…” was all that Abu Marak could utter in between gasps for breath. Surrounded by villagers in the safety of his house near Durabanda in the West Garo Hills, Abu’s eyes still mirrored the excitement of spotting the animal. Within a few days, Abu’s account, coupled with those of a few other villagers, became the raw material for a renewed scientific search for the legendary Bigfoot — mande burung in Garo. Sasquatch in North America, Yowie in [...]
The Lord God Bird Trailer
The Voice of America has announced that a new documentary film is in production about the ivory-billed woodpecker. The title of the new documentary by George Butler is The Lord God Bird. This film’s title, of course, reflects the name of the bestseller that appeared just as the news of the new video was hitting the media – Phillip Hoose’s The Race to Save the Lord God Bird (NY: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2004). However, Phillip has confirmed that his book is not the foundation of this documentary. The VOA’s low-key release follows: A North American bird believed to have [...]
Women Bigfooters Do Better Fieldwork?
Cartoonist Ted Bastien’s graphic view captures my Coast to Coast AM with George Noory appearances, including ones such as last night’s discussion of black panthers, Sasquatch research, and Bigfoot history. One of the interesting side talks George and I had on his show was about how women – a la’ Jane Goodall – need support to live in pairs for six months or more in the woods, doing Bigfoot research. The non-threatening approach of the great apes and Sasquatch to women might be an overlooked key to future fieldwork. What do you think? Might women actually be able to get [...]
