Second “Wild Person” Seen

As I speculated in my first blog about this case on January 18th, when the news broke of a “feral woman” being found (or captured in some accounts), there has got to be a more involved story here. I wondered, could, perhaps, this little girl have been kidnapped by a Nguoi Rung (“Forest Person”) – the unknown hominids who are reported from along the (Kampuchean) Cambodian-Vietnamese border? Indeed, every early indication was that she had lived nocturnally, as reports of the Forest People have noted in the past. Boing Boing buddy David Pescovitz posted on the story earlier too, and [...]

Mystery Beast Thrice on Top Ten

The Lewiston Sun Journal has posted, in the midst of their current home page, a new listing (with links) of their most viewed news articles for 2006. Their earlier listing of the general story of Turner, Maine’s mysterious monster as number six was based on unknown criteria. This new online-based ranking of individual articles reinforces the common knowledge of those working at the paper – the Mystery Beast stories last summer sold the most newspapers for the L/A media organization over the most days in the reporters’ recent memory. As you can see below, story numbers 1, 5, and 9, [...]

Real Wild Woman Gone Wild: Kidnapped by Nguoi Rung?

One drawing of how the Nguoi Rung reportedly shows itself to locals in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia (Kampuchea). A wild woman has been caught. A feral human being, that is. All the details have not been collected. After all, the focus of this story can’t speak to her family of origin, yet. But this much is known, a real woman, missing for almost two decades, has been found in the rainforest of Southeast Asia. I’m wondering, what if this woman was kidnapped 19 years ago* by the Nguoi Rung, the wild forest people of Vietnam? Was the little eight-year-old girl, [...]

Top 100 Cryptic Mammals

When this baby Sri Lankan slender loris is all grown up, it won’t be more than 5 inches long. But it’ll have huge night vision eyes. The Zoological Society of London has created an amazing list of the world’s top 100 rarest and thus most endangered mammalian species. "We are focusing on EDGE species — that means they are Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered," announced the Zoological Society of London ‘s Jonathan Baillie. "These are one-of-a-kind species. If they are lost there is nothing similar to them left on the planet. It would be a bit like the art world [...]

Kokako Becomes A Cryptid

Extinct? Which one? In less detailed media reports you may hear today or over the weekend, the New Zealand Ko¯kako has been declared extinct. Sad news indeed, but let’s be specific. It is not an entire species that is being declared extinct. Once again, also, there are hints that this may be another subspecies, despite recent sightings, which is being declared extinct too early. The one with the orange wattles is allegedly gone. But is it? Is the Ko¯kako the New Zealand version of the ivory-billed woodpecker? The South Island Ko¯kako is the subspecies that is now being declared extinct. [...]

Giant Owls, Mystery Millionaires & the CIA

Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. – from Goldfinger by Ian Fleming, who achieved the rank of Commander in British Naval Intelligence. Rumors are sweeping throughout Kashmir of a mystery millionaire who will pay a high bounty on the capture of giant owls. Now we hear that some are saying this is just a cover story for the CIA. That this news is related to the hunt for bin Laden. Does this sound like something from the covert intelligence days of millionaire Tom Slick in that part of the world? Why are two other "giant [...]

Art Deco Adventures: Patagonian Plesiosaurus

Click on image for a full size pdf version of the April 9, 1922, Lima, Ohio, graphic. Today, the lake monster reported in Lago (English: Lake) Nahuel Huapi in the northern Patagonia region between the provinces of Río Negro and Neuquén, in Argentina, near the border with Chile, is called “Nahuelito.” The huge lake itself, which is about 1350 feet deep, covers over 300 square miles at the base of the Patagonian mountains, a perfect site for a watery cryptid, variously described as a giant serpent or a huge hump. Or a prehistoric dinosaur? Forget about Africa’s Mokele-mbembe hunts in [...]
