Click on image for full-size version I am always interested in what the various news services do with Cryptomundo’s stories and how those get “re-mixed,” so to speak, for different audiences. Here’s an example, thanks to the alternative press feeder system, the Wireless Flash News (WFN). It is about a dispatch that was sent this morning to 800 rock and news radio stations, alternative papers, and media other outlets worldwide. Here is the recipe: Take one part The Top Ten Bigfoot Stories of 2006 you saw here first, add in a dash of year-end timing, have it kneaded by the [...]
Bigfoot Tooth Found?
Has a recent hairy hominoid encounter with a respected Cherokee elder produced physical evidence of a Bigfoot? A tooth? What do you see in the way of the reported Sasquatch canine? According to one witness, this is what the Hebbardsville creatures look like. Described as averaging 8 feet tall, 400 lbs. with black skin and long arms that hang below the knees which they use in order to run swiftly. Flat, bearded face with receding chin-line, broad nose, thin lips and dark brown eyes beneath a prominent brow ridge. Covered in short hair with longer fringes about the beard, back [...]
Maine’s Mystery Beast Banner
The Maine Mystery Beast banner remains safely in the Pine Tree State! Rogier van Bakel, his wife Debbie, and their two delightful daughters (one shown above) came by over this Christmas weekend to drop off the unique Paul Szauter sideshow art, entitled the Maine’s Mystery Beast banner. Van Bakel is a well-traveled, well-spoken journalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Wired, Christian Science Monitor, Wall Street Journal, and other publications. We had a good talk about all matters of cryptozoology and Forteana, and I showed them some of the items around my in-house museum. Of [...]
Discovering the Dhole
Remember the episode called "Alpha" in season six of The X-Files? It involved a cryptid dhole from China that was blamed for going on a killing rampage. The dhole (Cuon alpinus) is in the news because Vietnam feels these allegedly recently extinct "red dogs" are back from the edge in their country. "In Search for the Endangered Dhole" (Vietnam News Service, December 24, 2006) tells of the new quest for more about these elusive candids and their probable recovery. Reporter Lam Quang Huy, after giving background information, shared this compelling account of searching for the dhole with villagers: The first [...]
“Cryptozoology” Makes Another Top Ten List
The entryway’s Bigfoot at the Kansas City exhibition was photographed by Professor Hex. On Sunday, December 24, 2006, The Kansas City Star art critic Alice Thorson has produced a list for her “Year in Review: 10 Highlights in Visual Arts.” Entitled “Wise Visions, Decisions: These artists and institutions made a difference to KC in 2006,” Thornson writes: We close 2006 with visual arts kudos to 10 individuals and institutions that this year demonstrated vision, backbone and generosity. Out of Thorson’s list of 10, she has noted the exhibition “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale” as number 3: Animal magnetism: Raechell [...]
Bdeogale jacksoni Discovered in Tanzania
Jackson’s mongoose (Bdeogale jacksoni), sometimes called the black-footed mongoose, is considered Africa’s least-known carnivore and now has been discovered in Tanzania. I’ve already included a note of this breaking news late last night in my posting of The Top Ten Cryptozoology Stories of 2006, but here are the full details: The Bronx Zoo-based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) announced December 23, 2006, that a camera-trap study in the mountains of Southern Tanzania has now recorded Africa’s least-known and probably rarest carnivore: Jackson’s mongoose, known only from a few observations and museum specimens. The findings, reported in the latest issue of the [...]
