In the midst of a very long article reviewing the eating establishments and the The Ho Chi Minh Museum of Hanoi, Vietnam, there’s a surprising update on the Old City’s most famous cryptid. Photograph of the Hoan Kiem Lake’s Giant Turtle. Credit Vietnam.net Here’s what we learn from Simon Busch, in the January 28th edition of London’s Financial Times: The turtle of Hoan Kiem Lake sounds terribly lonely. Such experts as there are on this most elusivecreature, Vietnam’s only slightly less fabulous version of the Loch Ness Monster, contend furiously over its likely age and its species – even its [...]

These creatures have never been, well, verified by the stamp of science. But that doesn’t stop Cryptomundo, a site that scours the Web for news of “the most elusive and rare animals (cryptids) on this planet earth.” And it won’t stop us, either! Here, read of the mule-eared, thick-necked critter roaming the wilds of western Arkansas! Thrill to [...]

Teams to Search for Orang Dalam
Malaysian media reports today that two teams of researchers will search the wilderness areas for their local “Bigfoot,” which, as I have mentioned before here (1, 2, 3), should more properly be called “Orang Dalam.” These cryptid hairy hominoids have been seen in the Malaysian rainforests of Tanjung Piai, Mersing, Kahang, Endau-Rompin National Park and Kota Tinggi. The recent wave of media interest developed after workers at a fish pond in Kampung Mawai, Kota Tinggi claimed to have seen in November 2005, a three-member family of these creatures, composed of two apparent adults and a child. As to the proposed [...]
New Malaysian Footprints
There’s been a new find of some remarkable footprints in Malaysia. They appear to be four-toed. Are they the tracks of the unknown hairy hominoid, the Orang Dalam from Malaysia? Or something else? As the media report notes: “Bio-dioversity researcher Vincent Chow, who yesterday [Tuesday, January 23, 2006, local Malaysia time] led a team of eight Bigfoot enthusiasts, including a professional from England, to investigate the footprints, said there was a strong possibility they were made by a Bigfoot creature.” The team decided they were not the tracks of elephants. But could this one animal that left footprints, but was [...]

Emela-Ntouka: Africa’s Killer of Elephants
Cryptomundo Exclusive The Emela-ntouka has been an unknown animal of some confusion in Africa. A few chroniclers have felt it was merely another named cryptid representing the sightings of the Mokele-mbembe. But as revealed by an image seen here for the first time, it appears to be a beast unlike the saurapod-like Mokele-mbembe. Click on image for larger size Copyright: Michel Ballot – Mokélé – Mbembé CAMEROUN 2004 On page 219 of one of my recent field guides, written with Patrick Huyghe, we noted, among several different kinds of alleged “dinosaurs” in Africa, “one animal is called by locals the [...]
Movies, Music, and Teaching About Hidden Animals
I guess I could discuss the ill whale swimming up the Thames today, and how the crowds are flocking to see it. It does remind me of what might have happened along the New England coast in 1817-1819, during the era of all those Sea Serpent sightings. Or I could talk about the fact that at the Slamdance Film Festival, The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang is being screened, or that some infamous Skunk Ape “hunters” are performing at their own “Everglades Swamp Hop” music festival. But, hey, those stories are merely evidence of the usual cryptozoology entertainment news. (Well, maybe a [...]
New Waspfish Discovered Off South Africa
Sometimes you find new animals in museums. Look up the story of the Congo peacock on page 71 of Cryptozoology A to Z, someday. It’s a good one. For today, we turn our attention to a museum in South Africa. Yes, it has happened again. A specimen collected in 1994 has been revealed to be a new species. It was "re-discovered" at the South Africa Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity collection in Grahamstown. According to the South Africa Herald on January 18th: "The discovery of the creature, a species of the venomous, little-known waspfish, means great kudos for the institute." One [...]
