Cryptid: The Ultimate Cryptozoology Experience

I’ve written, in depth, about the definition of cryptid, a word that was coined in 1983, by John E. Wall of Manitoba. Now, a mere 23 years later, it has become such an important part of our popular culture that one of the most incredibly well-designed graphic novels to capture the topic of this blog is set to appear! Are you prepared for Cryptid? Secret Lab Studios, in association with Thrill House Comics, and the world renowned award winning Weta Workshop Design Team of New Zealand have announced that they are currently collaborating on designs for Cryptid, a new and [...]

Little People Confirmed As New Species

While people can debate the reality of giant hairy Johor Hominids, huge hirsute Canadian Sasquatch, or little furry Hawaiian Menehunes, there’s no denying the continuing and expanding picture of the reality of the tiny, three-feet tall human-like beings of Indonesia. We have their bones. In a new, just-published July 2006 paper in the Journal of Human Evolution, scientists have confirmed that the so-called "Hobbits" of Flores, Indonesia, are a separate species. (Please read here for other Cryptomundo revelations about these real-life little hominids and their contemporary sightings.) Yesterday, USA Today’s Dan Vergano summarized the results: Now a study accepted for [...]

New Jersey Bigfoot

How do local Bigfoot groups begin? How do they establish themselves? How do they “get out there” to have the public know they are local investigators? Craig’s group in Texas is a high-evolved and well-oiled machine. But they all start the same way. Most begin as a grassroots effort, and today, since I recently spotlighted the New Jersey Bigfoot on The X-Files, here’s a follow-up on the continuing but new local group in that state: Upcoming Bigfoot Lecture by Drew Vics Thursday, July 20, 2006, at 7:00 PM: “Exploring the Possibility of Bigfoot in New Jersey.” The New Jersey Bigfoot [...]

World War III and Cryptozoology

Jeremiah 10:22: Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons. As the world seems to be rushing onward to World War III, let us pause, for a moment, to consider what impact this Armageddon might have on cryptozoology in the Middle East. On July 13th, Jon Stewart of the Comedy Central’s “Daily Show” said he got up, had a nice egg and cheese sandwich, a cappuccino, turned on his television, and, as Annie Wu at TV Squad noted, realized [...]

Cryptozoologist of the Day: Jesse Dye

My Cryptomundo nod of the day goes to Mr. Jesse Dye of Kentucky, for his positive reinforcement of the true nature of cryptozoology. In an article written by Howard McEwen, with photographyby Ernest Coleman (no relation), and published on Sunday, July 16, 2006, in The Enquirer of Cincinnati, mention is made of the re-naming of a lake on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. The body of water has been called “Lake Inferior” for years. But now, in the midst of a privately funded $2.4 million renovation, the alumni association thought that a more appropriate name for the large pond [...]

Johor Photos Promoted For Funding?

According to a new article in the Malaysian newspaper, The New Straits Times, the ultimate motive of all of the recent news about the launch of the Johor Hominid website may have been revealed: a call for funding. R. Sittamparam, writing in an article on July 15th, notes that Vincent Chow’s and Sean Ang’s website is petitioning UNESCO for “world heritage status.” The news writer found that the website has …started a signature campaign among Malaysians and the international community to support the petition, which will also be sent to the Government. The petition states that the discovery of close-up [...]

1934’s Murderous Monster Marsupial

Sometimes the strangest things you hear about in cryptozoology catch up with physical evidence years later. Take, for instance, Killer Kangaroos. No, I’m not talking about the Mystery Kangaroos that punched out the Chicago police in the 1970s. I’m thinking, instead, about the Killer Kangaroo of 1934. This week saw news out of Australia that “killer kangaroos,” “demon ducks of doom,” and eighteen other previously unknown species had been discovered by paleontologists at a dig site in Queensland, northern Australia. The new animals’ tags immediately made me think of the names I’d coined or heard before in cryptozoology. Who couldn’t [...]
