I went to Ohio on Wednesday, April 9th, 2008, to give a special talk to a private, thoughtful, intellectual group of 150 people at the research organization called Emerson Climate Technologies. They wanted someone to stimulate their thoughts, to give examples of a different creative process, and, yes, to entertain them, scientifically and humanely. I did that by giving an illustrated lecture, full of humor and humanness, entitled “Cryptozoology: Passion and Patience.” I covered a lot of ground, from the beginnings of the study of hidden animals, through mentions of Ivan T. Sanderson, Bernard Heuvelmans, Ruth Harkness, Scott Norman, and [...]

Gorilla Sightings and Gorilla Suits
Are we entering an era when gorilla-suit-wearing workshop may become the next big rage (see the story at Boing Boing) and help people out in their cryptid hoaxes? Actually, using what Charles Fort called the “Wipe,” here’s the latest example of a quick explanation for something anomalistic, this time using the old chestnut, a gorilla suit, out of Tupelo, Mississippi. With four gorilla sightings on Thomas Street on Wednesday [April 9, 2008], it seemed the infamous Oliver inspired a copycat or copy primate. According to police, two postal workers and two parents picking their children up from school claimed to [...]
Charlton Heston Has Died
“Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape.” – Taylor (Charlton Heston) in Planet of the Apes (1968) Charlton Heston, who won the 1959 best actor Oscar as the chariot-racing “Ben-Hur” and portrayed Moses, Michelangelo, El Cid, Taylor, and other heroic figures in movie epics of the ’50s and ’60s, has died. He was 84. Heston spokesman Bill Powers says the actor died Saturday night, April 5, 2008, at his home in Beverly Hills with his wife Lydia was at his side. Heston revealed in 2002 that he had symptoms consistent with Alzheimer’s disease, saying, “I must reconcile [...]
What Does A Female Bigfoot Look Like?
The above drawing of the William Roe encounter’s Sasquatch was used to illustrate Ivan T. Sanderson’s men’s magazine article detailing Roe’s sighting. From the initials of the artist in the right hand corner, they do not appear to match Morton Kunstler’s. The closeup of the Roe drawing done by Kunstler in Sanderson’s 1961 ABSM book seems to have been based on the above sketching (but they are different). The image on the left is usually noted as Roger Patterson’s drawing of the “Old Woman” of the 1924 Albert Ostman encounter. But most drawings in Patterson’s book are reproductions from others’ [...]
Yowie Photo
Sometimes everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. Sometimes people are just in the right place at the right time. What is this episode all about? Tony Healy’s and Paul Cropper’s The Yowie: In Search of Australia’s Bigfoot has made these hairy hominoids quite popular in their own country and much more well-known around the world. More people are trying to get new pieces of evidence. Now comes word that one person says he has proof. Proof…Paul Compton with one of the photos that he believes backs up his personal claims of a giant Yowie-like animal living in the Glen [...]
Too Much Fooling
My brief editorial in the wake of this year’s April Fool’s Day is that there was entirely too much fooling around. None of the jokes were overly interesting or even intelligent. Most of the ones I read were downright stupid. Perhaps, a random few (e.g. the “Happy Valley Horror”?) were marginally funny. By the end of the day, I was getting a pit in my stomach as I saw the tidal wave of bad jokes and lame attempts to truly try to fool people come ashore. I was sorry I posted any April Fool’s stories. Most reporters actually wrote their [...]
Blaming Bigfoot: AP Video
Gene R. Morrill The Associated Press has posted on YouTube their video report on Gene R. Morrill, 57, of New Ipswich, New Hampshire. Morrill had previously pleaded guilty to 20 charges stemming from his efforts to solicit 13-year-old boys over the Internet and blamed it all on a molestation he alleged he had suffered by a Bigfoot. From open giggling to an undercover officer interviewed with his face hidden, this is a unique news document.
Hominology: The Russian View
A new work has been published by Crypto-Logos in Russia, entitled Bigfoot Research: The Russian Vision. It appears it will soon be offered by Hancock House. (I have not seen a review copy yet.) The book’s author is Dmitri Bayanov; it was compiled by Christopher L. Murphy, and edited by Roger Knights.
Happy Valley Horror?
Happy Valley group concerned school will harm Bigfoot habitat A local environmental group has vowed to stop construction of a new Coweta elementary school, claiming the work will destroy the habitat of a Bigfoot-like creature known as the Happy Valley Horror. “The Board of Education of Coweta County is going to build a new elementary school on Jim Starr Road and forever change our quiet country life,” said Michael Bright, head of the newly-formed group Save The Happy Valley Horror (STHVH). “My concern is that this area is known to be the home of the infamous and rare Happy Valley [...]
