Share Your CryptoPlates
Maine, it was noted this week, has the 6th highest (by per capita) number of vanity plates in the United States of America. Here’s Cryptomundo correspondent Maine Crypto’s new “Cryptid” plate, her just-issued Maine license tags for her car. Very attractive, won’t you say? Do you have cryptozoologically-themed plates? What’s yours? My plates happen to read “Crypto1″ (Maine).
Yucatan Gorillas
French cryptozoologist Michel Raynal writes: “You may remember that in the Ameranthropoid saga, there is a frequent mention of gorilla-like statues found in Yucatan. Montandon alluded to these statues in 1929, and published an article with photographs in 1931.” Raynal shares these with Cryptomundo: Link to document. Gorilla-like statues in Yucatan
A Passion For Field Guides: Updated
Look, to be honest, I love field guides. I don’t merely have a shelf of field guides. I literally have a bookcase full of them, over a hundred different titles. With more in storage. I have such a passion for them, I wrote a couple and am planning on more. But what do we do with all of them? I recently saw this amusing photo on a bird books digest forum, with that birdwatcher out in the field with an armful of field guides. It is a paradox, indeed. You want to take field guides with you into the bush, [...]
Bigfooter Sam Sherry Dies
Sam Sherry of Wilpen, Pennsylvania, holds plaster casts of Bigfoot tracks that he found in his area. Correspondents Eric Altman and Paul Johnson have sent along word today that Pennsylvania Bigfoot researcher Sam Sherry, 86, has passed away. Sherry died at the Veteran’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, yesterday, February 22, 2008, at 1 p.m. The viewing and funeral will be at Snyder’s funeral home in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Altman writes: “For those who knew Sam or had the pleasure of meeting Sam, he was one of a kind and a real character….Even into his 80′s, without sight or hearing, Sam still travelled [...]
New Berkeley Bigfoot Exhibition
On Valentine’s Day, six years ago, I lost a friend; we all did, when the field of cryptozoology saw the death of a great man. Dr. Grover Krantz passed away, too young. (See his obituary here.) I am happy to exclusively announce today a new, brief exhibit that honors, by coincidence, Krantz’s legacy this month. From February 8th through February 29th, 2008, the Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology (PHMA), Berkeley, California, has placed on display two Bigfoot casts, which had been donated by Grover Krantz to their collection. The specific exhibit was curated by Marco Centin, Exhibit Designer, at PHMA. [...]
Mystery Bones
Okay, folks, your cryptozoological mystery bones fieldwork assignment is to identify the following. Examine the two separate specimens brought before you, and record your best guesses as to what they are. They have nothing to do with each other. 1) Mystery skull 2) Mystery “teeth” What do you think they are? You be the investigator.
Bigfoot for President ‘08
February 5, 2008, is Super Tuesday. What is being called a historical, nearly national, primary for American politics will be a great day for pinback button collectors. But where are the humorous cryptid collectibles? I have conducted almost 50 years of investigating cryptozoology throughout America and the world, and devoted a sizable amount of time in preserving popular culture cz items along the way. I’ve picked up every tangible object I could obtain on Bigfoot and a universe of varied cryptids, needless to say, and now they are in the museum, or awaiting display in storage. Little known to most [...]

Still Unsolved: Mystery Fish Postcard Photo
Despite speculations, theories, thoughts, rumors, ideas, hypotheses, and claims, this longest standing mystery at Cryptomundo has never been fully solved. The postcard photo, originally sent to me by Phyllis Mancz of Ohio, has become such an enigmatic icon that it became part of the design on the front of my new edition of Mysterious America: The Ultimate Guide to the Nation’s Weirdest Wonders, Strangest Spots, and Creepiest Creatures. The Mystery Fish postcard, first noted here on November 29, 2005, has never been identified, as to exact location or species. New people sometimes have new ideas. Lots of new readers may [...]
