Creature From the Black Lagoon Again

Boing Boing has a good new posting on the just-released Creature From the Black Lagoon novel. Cory Doctorow writes: "If you’re looking for a fun little paperback to take you away from your life for a couple hours, you need look no further." Perhaps we all will need this after the election is over today… As I’ve mentioned at Cryptomundo before, the original concept for the movie developed from the excitement in the early 1950s that surrounded the Comoros Islands (near Madagascar) discovery of a "living fossil," the coelacanth. After its initial find in 1938, and the eventual acceptance that [...]

Chimp Sighting = Skunk Ape?

For the actual photograph, see the new posting, “New Photo: Is It A Skunk Ape?“ What if Florida’s supposedly identified but uncaught and out-of-place “apes” are really unknown anthropoids, cryptids all? As I’ve said and written for years, the recent questionable testimonies and fake photographs by certain people of Pacific Northwest Bigfoot-styled hairy hominids (upright, 7-8 feet tall, human-like) in Florida, which are being called “Skunk Apes” probably have little to do with the actual “Skunk Apes” of the Sunshine State. Specifically, the traditional “Skunk Ape” sightings, ape-like footprint finds, and knuckle prints, mostly discussed from the 1940s through present, [...]

New Parrot Discovered

New parrot species found in Queensland 7th November 2006, 22:09 WST A veteran bird-watcher has discovered a new species of parrot in Queensland after a decade of searching. Queensland naturalist and wildlife cinematographer John Young has discovered the rare blue-fronted fig parrot in a rugged southern Queensland forest after an exhaustive search. The exact site of the finding has not been disclosed. Although Mr Young has known of the bird’s existence for 10 years, he only recently found evidence that the parrot differed from the endangered Coxen’s fig parrot that overlaps in range. Three fig parrots were known to occur [...]

Topanga’s “Condor”

What if this story is about a large flying cryptid? This youngster did a better job than many adults do when they see something large and unknown, flying off into the sunset. Monday, Nov 06, 2006 Small fry captures rare glimpse of straying big bird By Bob Pool Los Angeles Times Gabriel Gottfried, 5, shows the digital photo he took of a condor launching from a pine tree near his Los Angeles home. LOS ANGELES – Like any good bird-lover, Gabriel Gottfried knew what to do when he spied the huge creature perched on a tree branch outside his Topanga [...]

Dolphin Photo

Here’s the photo of the dolphin that goes with the story previously noted here of the dolphin with "extra legs," actually fins, apparently. AP This photo, released by the Taiji Whale Museum, highlights the extra set of fins. The tail is being held by a diver whose hand is visible at upper right.

The Black Thing

This black (melanistic) color phase of the white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, was taken during hunting season in Michigan, apparently this October 2006. They are said to be rarer than appearances of the albino phase. Thanks to John Lutz and Judith Rogers for sharing this.
