I enjoy reading stories about new sightings of Lake Monsters as much as the next guy, but what is up with retreading stories from the 1800s, so often? There’s been another local Utah article written about the Bear Lake Monsters. It revisits the same old stories that you perhaps have read before. What I find surprising is they hardly ever talk about the Utah Lake Monster sightings that are known from the 21st century, as documented elsewhere and mentioned by, for example, Karl Rose. There is no disputing that evidence for the Bear Lake Monsters was established by early leaders [...]
What Stick?
John Green, Rick Noll, and Chris Murphy discussed the recent revelations about the Patterson-Gimlin footage over the weekend. Rick Noll, returning from a trip to British Columbia, sent this along today, December 11th: I was with John Green this weekend and he showed me an email from M.K. Davis that contained yet another gif from the images I produced for John. In these M.K. is claiming to have discovered the creature carrying a stick. Looking at the images I started to laugh. The stick like figure is nothing but the outside darkend edge of the left hand… the palm of [...]
Yeti Crab And Beyond: New Marine Species 2006
The media attention is high today for the Sloan Foundation’s year six census of marine life, so I’ll keep this short. You can read one of the stories here, from CNN, and another here in The Hindu. At last count, I found over 200 versions of this story appearing in newspapers and online sites around the world. Courtesy © Ifremer / A. Fifis Press Release; click on image for larger view. The Yeti crab photo is getting recycled. (Click on the hyperlink for more about it.) Here’s a summary of the findings from the 2006 research: Shrimp, clams and mussels [...]
The Real Lost World Screens
A reminder: The Real Lost World airs tonight on Animal Planet – December 10th and then again on December 17th, 2006. It screens on Discovery HD Theater on December 14th, and in Canada on OLN Cable, December 17th, 2006. The documentary’s director Peter von Puttkamer was also the director of the successful 2002 series, Monster Hunters, and my all-time favorite “people” documentary about the quest, Sasquatch Odyssey: The Hunt for Bigfoot. Was It A Shunka Warak’in?
In December 2005, a strange wolf-like animal started killing livestock in McCone, Garfield and Dawson counties, Montana. By March 2006, it had struck six herds of sheep in McCone and Garfield Counties, wounding 71 and killing 36 ewes. The thing had even reached the status of being named; it was called "The Creature of McCone County." News articles appeared throughout the next few months, and it went national with an article in USA Today in May 2006. The number of livestock the "Creature" killed finally reached about 120, by the end of October 2006. Now comes word in a December [...]
Little Foot Coexisted With Homo
The remains of the apeman, dubbed Little Foot, were discovered in a cave complex at Sterkfontein by a local South African team in 1997. Its bones preserved in sediment layers, it is the most complete hominid fossil skeleton ever found. (Photo Credit: Alf Latham and used with his permission) Redating news published today calls for a younger age for the unknown species of Australopithecus popularly called "Little Foot," or technically "Stw 573." Initially, the species had been tentatively dated to three to four million years before present, but the new findings show the small upright Australopithecus died only about 2.2 [...]
Déjà Vu Davis
"The word is out! Yes we are saying Bigfoot is human, and we think we have proved it….Everyone said it was an ape or creature or something else. No, it’s a human being of some sort. A very large human at that. It could be one of the oldest races in existence. Clues are in the movie…You be the judge. Man in a suit – Miocene ape – no way!" – Pat Holdbrook, November 2006. "All the images and explanations will be in Holdbrook’s movie. I will be glad to preview with anyone the images, if they are willing to [...]
NZ Black Panther Film
Using the phrase “Black Panther” covers many felines, from the above melanistic jaguar from South America, shown here in a public domain photograph, to melanistic leopards from Africa and Asia. The term has also been used to indicate the reported cryptids from many locations, including New Zealand. A new documentary film is being made in New Zealand, which will discuss the sightings of the “Mid-Canterbury panther.” The black cat has been seen by local residents around Mayfield, Mount Somers and Ashburton, New Zealand. No indigenous melanistic or black felids are known from New Zealand. But several reports exist, including from [...]
Dzungarian Bare Knees
Why do some unknown hominoids have bare knees? Wooden representation of a Proto-Pygmy from Africa. Witness drawing of a Yowie from Australia. In 1913, Muscovite V. A. Khakhlov submitted to the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences his extraordinarily detailed report about the unknown hairy hominids of eastern Asia. In one section of the document, Khakhlov gathered reports from the native Kazakhs of Dzungaria. Dzungaria is named after a Mongolian kingdom which existed in Central Asia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Today, Dzungaria is a geographical region within the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwestern China. The area is a largely [...]
Scientific Names for Bigfoot
Harry Trumbore’s drawing (above) of the Himalayan Yeti. I wrote this paper about a decade ago, but just ran across it recently. Considering that Craig Woolheater’s discussion today is “Down Classification Avenue With Sasquatch,” it seemed appropriate to revisit my thoughts on this matter, more specifically, here today. Scientific Names for Bigfoot What is the scientific name for “Bigfoot”? This is a question with a few complex answers. “Bigfoot,” of course, is the post-1958 name for those (seemingly) unknown hairy hominoids found in the Pacific Northwest of the USA with large human-like footprints and an upright stance. With the Canadian [...]
