A.I. Bezzerides, 98, a novelist-turned-screenwriter best known for post-World War II film noir classics such as Kiss Me Deadly, On Dangerous Ground and Thieves’ Highway , died January 1, 2007, after a brief illness. Albert Isaac Bezzerides was born Aug. 9, 1908, in Samsun, Turkey. His mother was Armenian and his father a Turkish-speaking Greek. Peter Loh has penned a new image (above), and I feel honored to be placed under his own special cryptocartoonist’s magnifying glass, once again. In “My Comic Life,” I overviewed various artists’ past graphic attempts to capture me, including the following by Loh: That Loren, the fedora-wearing Loren, was created by Loh for Scott Marlowe’s Crypto-Man comic series. New Kids’ Books on Cryptids
There is a new series of children’s books on cryptozoology for the New Year. Rosen Publishing has walked this way before. This New York City-based publisher produced a series of “Secret Files” children’s books on cryptids in 2002. It has now followed with their “Graphic Mysteries” 48-pages-long books for 2006 and 2007. The 2002 titles, which remain in print, are: Yeti: The Abominable Snowman by Laura Anne Gilman (2002); Bigfoot by Greg Cox (2002); and The Loch Ness Monster by Martin Delrio (2002). Thai Turtle Rediscovery
Thai villagers have caught a river terrapin turtle that was thought to be extinct in the country, the World Wide Fund for Nature-Thailand announced this week. The female turtle – known for its egg-shaped shell and upturned snout – was found January 3, 2007, in a mangrove canal in Phang Nga province on the country’s Andaman coast. It was the first time the turtle species has been found in Thailand in two decades. The mangrove terrapin (Batagur baska) found is pictured below:
