New “Paddler” Photo Surfaces

A new photograph, above, has surfaced of Idaho’s Lake Monster, Paddler (specifically look at the right hand corner). And I do mean surfaced. This image was taken on March 29, 2007, from Grouse Mountain, Idaho, by The River Journal’s staff photographer Jay Mock and sent to Cryptomundo by “Surrealist Research Bureau” columnist Jody Forest. Obviously, then, Paddler is the real deal. Paddler, the Lake Pend Oreille Monster, does appear to exist. But is it merely a cover story for the use of Navy submarines or are submarine sightings being confused with actual lake monster accounts? In the early 1940s, near [...]

Cryptomundo Wins A Webby

The results are in, and Cryptomundo has been selected as one of the few “Official Honorees” for a Webby. Here’s the official statement, plus the list of the other winners in our category. 11th Annual Webby Awards Official Honoree Selections As a result of the superior quantity and quality of sites entered, the 11th Annual Webby Awards recognized sites and teams that demonstrated a standard of excellence. Congratulations to all [...]

“Monkey-Headed Baby” or Not?

Monkey x human offspring do not exist from Homo sapiens females. What you are about to read may make you upset, and if you view the video referenced, you may become sick. What are humans thinking to make such things into news? Not surprisingly, as shown above, people have made babies with defects into “monsters” for hundreds of years. The only difference now, it’s on YouTube. Some things being uploaded onto the internet – technically being reposted because they are on the broadcast news – are so unfortunate that I wish I could expunge them from my memory. I hope [...]

One Million Species & Counting

Of course, the criteria for making the cut via the complex gathering described here will not apply to the cryptids seen, photographed – such as this unknown ape above in Florida – but not taken. Will it become the new yardstick of the future? The Catalogue of Life, available on CD and on the Internet (www.catalogueoflife.org), is the result of a worldwide collaboration involving so far about 50 contributing databases and the work of 3,000 biologists. The project plans to cover all estimated 1.75 million known species by 2011. The project is led by the University of Reading’s Professor Frank [...]

Thoreau: Listen For New Species

I understand he wasn’t talking about “new species” in the same way that cryptozoologists do, but this thoughtful quote for the day speaks to how we have to “listen” as well as “look.” The air is full of birds, and as I go down the causeway, I distinguish the seringo note. You have only to come forth each morning to be surely advertised of each newcomer into these broad meadows. Many a larger animal might be concealed, but a cunning ear detects the arrival of each new species of bird. These birds give evidence that they prefer the fields of [...]

Rare Sumatran Striped Rabbit Photographed

The Sumatran Striped Rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri) has been captured on film, again. The appearances of the Sumatran striped rabbit are so rare that when seen in the West, many believe someone is pulling an Easter bunny joke. But indeed the appearance of one of these in the wilds of Indonesia has been breaking news at week. Here are the details and some background. In 1972, one confirmed sighting was made of what was said to be a Sumatran Striped Rabbit. The last specimen was actually collected in 1916, and was presumed extinct until photographed with the TrailMaster remotecam in 1997, [...]
