This is the introduction and the “western segment” of “APPENDIX I” from Mysterious America: The American Lion (Panthera atrox): Cryptid Black Panthers, Maned Cats, and Striped Felines Selected Sightings The first edition of Mysterious America (1983) detailed decades of large mystery felid sightings. This edition updates that work, gathering old records, as well as new ones. This revised volume also adds, for the first time, this appendix to support the added details in Chapters 12 and 13. In 1994, Mark A. Hall published a list of seventy specific cases to illustrate the black panther and maned cat data in his [...]
Ely Footage Is Back
It’s back. The "forgotten footage" of the Ely Sasquatch has returned. Perhaps this is only important for viewing for those that didn’t see it’s brief appearance before? Maybe this “news” is only significant for Bigfoot historians interested in documenting the exact ups and downs of this story? Whatever the reason, Cryptomundo wants to alert you to the news, and you do with it what you wish. It is intriguing to figure out what is going on here, because it is certainly unclear who is putting this video up again. Did someone take a capture-copy of the recently removed video and [...]
Fortean Evolution
Regarding the ongoing Mysterious America, which goes out of print Friday, here’s a review of it from Bob Rickard, editor of Fortean Times: MYSTERIOUS AMERICA Loren Coleman Paraview Press, New York; 2001. 334pp, index, illus, appendix. A fortean’s view of forteana. Essential reading. This book was first published in 1983; at that time is was the most important and detailed snapshot of forteana in modern America. In this revised edition, veteran fortean investigator and FT columnist Loren Coleman brings the picture up to date. Included here are classic reports on the Dover Demon, the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, Phantom Clowns, [...]
Bigfoot Songs
The rising tide of interest in The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang continues, and now takes a musical turn. Cryptomundo has kept you informed about how this film won at Slamdance, and of its acclaim. Now comes word that a big music corporation has lined up for an associated contract. The Hollywood Reporter notes today that Sony BMG Music Entertainment has signed the U.S. rights to Tim Skousen’s The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang. The film was the 2006 Slamdance Film Festival audience award winner. Bringing together the people that brought us Napoleon Dynamite, the buzz is so loud about this film, it is [...]
20,000 Leagues Director Dies
Richard Fleischer, who directed the 1954 sci-fi movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, has died of natural causes at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, on March 25, 2006. He was 89. Fleischer’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is best remembered by cryptofiction fans for its famed scene of the giant squid attacking Captain Nemo’s submarine, the Nautilaus, a major motion picture achievement of its day. The movie was based on Jules Vernes science fiction story of the same name, which was based on true reports of cryptid-style encounters with the giant squid or Kraken. The [...]
Ely Video Is Back
In only a few days this week, the Ely Sasquatch Video has been posted, removed, enhanced, re-posted in “regular” and “closeup” versions, then new footage found that was posted, and finally, yesterday, all of the footage was removed. After the removal, Richard Sade posted a comment at my Cryptomundo blog, “Ely Footage Removed,” which read simply: “The world is not ready for what I wanted to show them.” Then very late last night, Richard Sade re-posted his “closeup” segment. The footage can now (while it lasts) be viewed here. Also, Sade placed this note with the late March 24th newly [...]
Dragons in Paris
An exhibition and exposition on “Dragons: Science and Fiction” has been announced at the Museum of Natural History in Paris [Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle à Paris (36 rue Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire)] from April 5 though November 6, 2006. Their website can be found by clicking here. Beaucoup de mercis French cryptozoologist Michel Raynal, for this news.
Jumping Johor Roundup
Considering the recent Johor Bigfoot news was about the destruction of footprints, things have taken a positive turn, by week’s end. Reports of new encounters, a commitment to evidence preservation, and a May 2006 expedition make for an exciting roundup of Malaysian Bigfoot happenings. Be forewarned, however, this is not your grandparents’ “Bigfoot”. As noted in The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates, we are dealing with something that is very different than your run-of-the-mill Sasquatch, of course. Old snaggle-tooth is back, in a close encounter of the hairy kind. Also, please turn off your cellphone while reading [...]
Cryptozoo Museums Worldwide
What and where are your favorite cryptozoology and Bigfoot museums throughout the world? Scotland’s cryptozoology collection at the National Museums of Scotland was recently highlighted in the Scotsman. The easiest exhibits to record, unfortunately, are often the hoaxes. Shown here are a Japanese-made mermaid and a Canadian-created furred trout, both taxidermy fakes. Dr. Geoff Swinney (below), Curator of Lower Vertebrates, Fish, Amphibians and Reptiles, National Museums of Scotland, examines the vertebrae of the Beast of Stronsay, from the carcass of the beast found on an Orkney island beach in 1808. Swinney, who is the resident cryptozoologist, in 1987, confirmed the [...]
Ely Footage Removed
The Ely Sasquatch Videoes (two original segments and the “forgotten” footage just discovered) have been removed by Richard Sade from the internet. While the BFRO was involved in assisting with placing a copyright on the video and enlarging the first segment, they were not responsible for withdrawing it, they exclusively tell Cryptomundo this evening. According to a source deep in that organization, the BFRO related to your Cryptomundo correspondent tonight: “No, we didn’t have the video removed. [The BFRO has] been back and forth with Mr. Sade on email, and his story has become increasingly shaky and frustrating. It’s a [...]
