New photographs, above, have been published of the “Montauk Monster,” which allegedly washed up on a beach in Montauk. These photos are by Christina Pampalone. The Montauk Monster has created an Internet sensation. It is today’s #1 Yahoo search. It’s been on Cryptomundo, Boing Boing, and The Anomalist for days. It reminds me of the “Maine Mutant.” Sometimes these kinds of things have a life of their own, so to speak, especially if there is a compelling image. Now we are seeing everyone under the sun piggyback (pun-intended) on the Montauk Monster. That’s okay. We’ve been here before. It is [...]

Unknown Fish Footage
Here is a new video of a strange, unidentified fish caught off Burgeo, Newfoundland ~ dated July 30, 2008: Appears to be some kind of deep sea species, such as the anglerfish. Humpback anglerfish (Melanocetus johnsonii) Krøyer’s deep sea angler fish (Ceratias holboelli), two images above. But actually, I think it may be a fish that is often mistaken for Ceratias holboelli. Triplewart seadevil (Cryptopsaras couesii) – Pêcheur à trèfle, found frequently in the delta of the St. Lawrence Seaway, not far from Burgeo.
Cryptid Washes Ashore At Montauk
Something strange has washed ashore at Montauk Island, New York. “This is an actual monster, some sort of rodent-like creature with a dinosaur beak. A tipster says that there is ‘a government animal testing facility very close by in Long Island,’” says Gawker in a posting for Tuesday, July 29, 2008. Comments like “That’s a turtle, without its shell,” make no sense because of the teeth. Some fossil turtles had teeth, but no modern turtles possess real teeth. What is this animal? Why can’t people put some sort of size reference object in these mystery photos? How big is this [...]
Saigas, Mammoths, and Pleistocene Parks
Travel with me today, from the concept of prehistoric trunked animals to the future establishment of Pleistocene Parks in Siberia and America. Regarding artist William Munns’ reconstruction theories about trunked dinosaurs, he observes, “In the matter of comparative anatomy with existent species, no existent skulls are identical, but two types do have nares at the top of the skull. One group are the cetaceans (porpoise and whales). The other are the Proboscidians (elephants).” As Munns points out, interestingly, “in mammals, the presumption of a trunk is freely given to any skull with high nares.” The macraucheniid litoptern is assumed to [...]
Steller’s Sea Ape
Steller’s Sea Ape, as drawn by Harry Trumbore, from The Field Guide to Bigfoot and Other Mystery Primates (2006: 64-65). A good overview of the expedition leading to the remarkable sighting of what has become known as Steller’s Sea Ape can be found in the November 17, 2005, article in the California Literary Review. The essay is by Peter Bridges, former U.S. ambassador to Somalia, and is about the animal discoveries made by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller. Bridges writes that: In January 1738, Steller set out from St. Petersburg on a five-thousand mile journey across European Russia and Siberia to [...]
Pondering the Aardvark
Why is the aardvark of some importance to cryptozoology, you might be wondering? In my revised slide show on the history of cryptozoology, I have one on the life of the “Father of Cryptozoology,” noting Bernard Heuvelmans, with the line: “Doctorate, aardvark’s teeth.” Bernard Heuvelmans’ 1939 thesis was dedicated to the classification of the hitherto unclassifiable teeth of the aardvark (Orycteropus afer), the African “anteater.” Of course, today we know the aardvark is not closely related to the South and Central American anteaters, at all, but it wasn’t always so. Aardvark is Afrikaans/Dutch for “earth pig.” Heuvelmans’ work helped to [...]
Greater Bamboo Lemur Discovery
Greater Bamboo Lemurs (Prolemur simus). Recent discovery, Lemur, Primate, Madagascar. The Greater Bamboo Lemurs lives in a maze of bamboo in the rainforests of Madagascar. These primates are the only lemurs being able to crack the hard fibers of giant bamboo that are their favored food. Copyright: Jonathan Linus Fiely Scientists have confirmed the existence of a previously unknown population of Greater bamboo lemurs in Madagascar more than 400 kilometres from the only other place where the Critically Endangered species is known to live, greatly raising hopes for its survival. The researchers believe there are 30-40 greater bamboo lemurs in [...]
Third Green Warning: Cryptid Reptile Loose
The lay of the land near Stivers Lagoon. Watch out for the water hazards on the nearby golf course. Another report of a huge, unidentified reptile? Let’s put the latest sightings in their NoCal context. The reptile spotted by two people at a Fremont, California, golf course last week remains at large, and there are no plans to look for it again unless someone else sees it, officials said. A week after initially being alerted to a supposed 3-foot-long reptile – possibly an abandoned illegal pet caiman – in the water near the third green at Fremont Park Golf Center, [...]
Bigfoot? Lost Hiker’s “Monkey” Sighting
I saw this one coming. A chimpanzee escapes near the San Bernardino Mountains, California, and then the media finds itself being more open to publishing sightings of hairy primates in the area. It is happening. Of course, the media and the caregivers to Moe, the chimp escapee, are divided about whether they want these mystery sightings to be “their” ape or not. So we see confused news items, such as the following one. Here we go again. You’ve been here before. A chimp among the nudist but not “their” chimp. Ape footprints but not “their” chimp’s footprints. This leaves us [...]
