Mystery Cats

Wisconsin’s Big Cats

Dateline Milton, Wisconsin: Kevin Edwardson has been trapping wild animals for years, but he wasn’t prepared for the creature that lunged at him from a hay mound in an abandoned barn last month. It was a cat. A very big cat. The Chicago Tribune publishes an article on mountain lions in the American hinterland, “Are big cats back on Midwestern prowl? More analysis is needed, but Wisconsin man’s story suggests eastward migration,” by Bob Secter, in their February 22, 2008 editions. The news examination is a long one, gives the usual rundown on track finds and sightings. You can find [...]

Patio Puma

I’ve received the following four photos so many times lately, I figured I better address the flow of alerts to me about them. The email usually is labeled “Kitty, Kitty, Kitty.” The location is given as someplace familiar and near you. I saw copies of these, wow, first about five years ago. It is amazing they are making a return appearance. Therefore, let me just mention them here as they are not what they seem to be. These are nothing more than what must be termed an internet rural legend! I guess some would call them a hoax. They are [...]

Exotic Cat Woman Dies

With the widespread news that actor Heath Ledger, 28, has been found dead in New York City, all other deaths have a tendency to be overlooked. Therefore, it is important to mention the quiet announcement this week of the passing of a legendary person known within the exotic cat business, Jeannette Giacinto of Tarzana, California. A longtime breeder and salesperson of exotic cats, Mrs. Jeannette Giacinto, known to her family and friends as Jan, died on January 6, 2008, succumbing to injuries sustained in a traffic collision on Halloween, October 31, 2007. Mrs. Giacinto remained hospitalized from the time of [...]

10,000 B.C.: Cryptofiction?

You have got to love the mammoths! And sabertoothed tigers! What elements of narrative cryptofiction, in which these animals, as well as the hominids, are shown as surviving late into protohistorical times in 10,000 B.C. overlap with our interests? Frankly, I always find it intriguing and instructive to see how artists, filmmakers, and scientists recreate Pleistocene animals, so as to give us a clue of what might be behind some cryptids. I look forward to this movie, therefore, for just such images. I guess there are other things to watch in this film too, with regard to our ancestors. However, [...]

New Mystery Panther Photo

The most frequently and quietly discussed cryptids in America are the mystery cats, the phantom felines, the so-called “Black Panthers” of legend and lore. Many people say they see them, so much so they are taken for granted in many parts of the country. While most photographs of “black cats” taken across fields turn out to be nothing more than long-distance pictures of the neighborhood tom-cats, once in a blue moon I’m shown a photograph that has me wondering. This week one such image came my way. Please see the attached pdf photograph file which shows an apparent black panther. [...]

What Pumas In Vegas, Stays In Vegas

Are the performing lions and white tigers the only big cats in Las Vegas? Are there mountain lions there too? Were people seeing things there the second day of the New Year? Mountain lions, also known as cougars, panthers, or pumas, have a wide range throughout the West, including in Nevada, and populations are increasing. But are there panthers wild in Las Vegas? History would tell us that they are around. In 1991, at the Nevada Test Site, north of Las Vegas, Nevada, Mary Saether, was attacked by a 120-pound female mountain lion. She suffered minor cuts and received 21 [...]

First ‘08 Media Report: Oz Mystery Cat Sighting

Lake Elizabeth in the Otway forest. If there is one thing that is predictable, it is that most new years will open with a published report of a mystery cat sighting, usually in the UK or Australia. Australia didn’t let us down this year. Of course, this is different than the actual first eyewitness account of the year, which might take a few days to be published. For all we know, there might have been more pterodactyl sightings last night in Washington State. The Great Otway National Park is a national park in Victoria (Australia), 162 km southwest of Melbourne. [...]

Desi Pondering: SF’s Tiger Event

One of the most important components to living, to me, is to always be open to learning new information, new things about the mundane and the extraordinary, and to understand how the new interacts with the old. As I read it, the mystery of how the tiger escaped from the grotto at the San Francisco Zoo remains. The riddle of why the two Indian brothers were there and what they were doing continues. Part of what has been an enigma is the role of the humans involved. But who are these individuals? As it turns out, the three men involved [...]

Dead Tiger Found in Texas

How often are such discoveries made, but never reported? Without the incident in San Francisco, would this one have ever been published? Sanitation crews in Dallas [Texas] made a shocking discovery after they received a call about a dead animal on Christmas Eve. An adult tiger was found dead when the crews searched a wooded area near Interstate 35E and Overton Road. A city spokesperson said the tiger has been shot several times. The animal, which was declawed and wearing a collar, was taken to the Dallas Zoo. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the United States Department of [...]
