Cryptozoology author Matt Bille, who found himself in the middle of a firestorm of “African lion” sightings in his hometown, was interviewed by the local media. On July 22, 2008, The Colorado Springs Gazette published an article about the Colorado Springs “lion.” In it they quoted Matt Bille. Or, should I say, misquoted him? Bille has emailed me that he “did not say the last half of the last sentence about making no rational sense.” Wildlife officials had a few things to say about the misquotations in the unfolding of this story too. Here is the article Bille sends along: [...]

Was It An African Lion?
A helicopter and members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and Colorado Division of Wildlife were among those searching for an African lion in eastern El Paso County on Monday. The search for the large cat was called off Monday afternoon. Was the large unknown animal seen in Colorado an African lion? Panthera atrox, the American Lion, known from the Pleistocene? A feral dog? An escaped pet felid? It certainly befits the classic definition of a cryptid, unknown, uncaught, unidentified, and yet surely an animal. Here is a roundup of the various reproductions of the cellphone image published this [...]

African Lion Hunt Ends
Crews called off the search for an African lion in a rural part of El Paso County, Colorado, late Monday afternoon (July 14, 2008), believing that the animal in question may just have been a big dog. But they don’t know. Three individuals reported an African lion, complete with mane and brush on the long tail. One official was quoted as saying the tracks were not cougar, not dog, but large felid tracks. A red mane was seen. And then there is the cellphone image capture. Here are various renderings of the photograph of the Mystery Animal: Will this be [...]
Maned Lion Spotted in Colorado
“Lion” photo courtesy of Sharon Harding-Shaw. Colorado, July 14, 2008. For comparison, I’ve added this photo of a lion demonstrating the tail up appearance. The Associated Press is reporting, today, July 14, 2008, that a large maned felid has been sighted in El Paso County, Colorado, in the Falcon Hwy. and Log Rd. area, near Colorado Springs. “An African Lion has been spotted. Two people reported seeing the lion, including one who captured a photo of the lion chasing dogs,” reads the first bulletin. Sheriff’s Lieutenant Lari Sevene says the lion was reported at about 8:00 am this morning in [...]
Serval Caught in Atlanta
The mystery felid was identified as various kinds of cats before it was finally officially verified to be a Leptailurus serval. The African wildcat was caught near Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, early Thursday, July 10, 2008. It is now on lock down and its owner could face misdemeanor criminal charges for bringing the illegal pet into the state. The Department of Natural Resources is working to locate its owner and find out how the animal found its way from the African savannahs to Atlanta. Several people have claimed the potentially dangerous cat, which may have been loose as long [...]
Held Over: CZ Talks/Day Two & New Cryptid Leads
Glad to see so many readers of Cryptomundo at Saturday, July 5th’s talk at Fort Knox. The late arrival crowds were so big that cars were backed up for a couple miles to get into the place. For Sunday, July 6th, when it is predicted people tend to get there earlier and on time, I’ve been asked to stay over to present at noon. Thus, I will give another hour long talk, with a Q&A session, outdoors with lots of replicas, artifacts, props and exhibits from the Interational Cryptozoology Museum. [No more news on the Island Falls black panther report, [...]
New Black Panther Sighting: Maine
This is the look of the wooded areas along Rt. 2, near Island Falls, Maine. I’m now in northern Maine, and I’ve learned there’s been a new Mystery Cat sighting from up this way. An Island Falls restaurant owner said that he and his wife saw a panther cross the road in front of them, coming out from a field in an area locally called Barker Ridge, between Island Falls and Sherman, onto Rt. 2. The photograph above shows the area going up to May Mountain, which is northeast of the sighting area. May Mt overlooks Mattawamkeag Lake, which is [...]
New Zealand’s Kaiwaka Lion
Scott Parker points to where the “Lion” was spotted. Reports of a Mystery Cat, said to look like a “lion,” have the Northland of New Zealand as the seat of much excitement these days. The giant alleged wild cat, described as a lion, was seen by Kaiwaka firefighter Allan Swanson’s son Carl, 18, during an urban search and rescue exercise in a quarry at Kaiwaka, 90 minutes north of Auckland, on May 29, 2008. Swanson was about 30 metres away from the beast when he saw it on the ridge of the Parker Lime Company quarry. Swanson says other locals [...]
