Lake Monsters

Japanese ChampQuest ‘07

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE from Wireless News Flash… Japanese Filmakers on “ChampQuest” in Vermont APRIL 19, 2007 PORTLAND, ME. (Wireless Flash) — The jig may soon be up for a sneaky lake monster who’s been hiding in a Vermont lake for nearly 200 years. That’s because a group of Japanese filmmakers are converging on Lake Champlain, Vermont, this weekend [April 22-25, 2007] in hopes of snapping footage of “Champ,” a cousin to the Loch Ness Monster that supposedly resides in the lake. Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, who is helping the filmmakers on what is being called “ChampQuest,” says there have been Champ [...]

Lake Ontario Monster Chases Pair

The Oswego Palladium reports that Leroy Johnson and his son, Orville, of R.D. 6, Oswego, report seeing a medium-sized sea serpent in the water of Lake Ontario off Nine Mile creek, last week. The supposed sea serpent looked like a large snake. The senior Johnson was fishing in the lake and had waded out to knee depth when he saw the serpent and he immediately beat it for shore. The animal chased him for some distance and then disappeared.Fulton [New York] Patriot, June 23, 1920 Thanks to Jerome Clark. Coming, April 24th – Mysterious America.

Frozen Monster Found Under April Ice

Here’s an April report of a monster being caught under ice: The St. Albans [Vermont] Messenger reports a story coming from Shelburne, Vt. A resident of the latter place while out on the ice in the vicinity of the Four Brothers, and near the New York side of the lake, found the remains of a monster creature frozen in the ice. The account says: “With the aid of his companion, he scraped away the crust from the surface of the ice for a distance of 20 feet and revealed a portion of the remains of what he thought must be [...]

Sounds of the “Thing”

The sea serpent[,] or “Thing,” was heard by others of the residents as well as by some of the cottagers, during his late re-appearance along the East shore [of the Clinton County, New York, peninsula that juts into Lake Champlain]. The sounds are described as peculiar, but whether they were made when the creature was disporting itself on the reef, or when he was “rolling up, tumbling up, any way to get up” on the shore, we are not informed. It is hoped that the editor of the Republican may sometime have the opportunity of examining the “Thing” at close [...]

Monster’s Head Spotted

The Lake Champlain sea serpent has again made its appearance, this time near Cedar Beach, a resort twelve miles south of Burlington[.] Mrs. Wm. E. Hagar and a party of friends being in camp there Wednesday morning last [July 18], when the lake was unusually calm, Mrs. Hagar noticed about half a mile distant a peculiar disturbance upon the otherwise smooth surface of the lake. Sure enough a “white cap” had appeared as though a strong wind might be blowing in that spot alone. Her son, Clifford, and Everett Towne were close at hand and both were called to the [...]

Champ’s Roar

We have received a call from Mr. Davis, of Grand Isle [Vermont], the gentleman who recently saw the supposed sea serpent. He states that he stood upon the bank of the lake [Champlain] at the time and he and his neighbors saw the animal distinctly, as it was not more than forty feet from the shore. It raised its head from the water and made a bellowing noise not unlike the sea lions seen in menageries, and then moved off, making the same noise while under water, its wake being distinctly visible. Mr. Davis states that the report that it [...]

Credible Citizens See Champ

A Lake Monster Three Reputable Citizens of St. Albans Discover What Appears to be a Huge Serpent, in Lake Champlain. The celebrated Lake Champlain sea-serpent has again made its appearance. The St. Albans [Vermont] Messenger says that on Friday afternoon [May 9] Charles H. Harvey, L. M. Downing and W. M. Downing, while fishing on a row boat west of St. Albans shore, heard a great agitation of the water at a distance, and on looking towards Butler’s Island, some two miles away, they discovered that the water was lashed into a foam. A dead calm was prevailing, there being [...]

New “Paddler” Photo Surfaces

A new photograph, above, has surfaced of Idaho’s Lake Monster, Paddler (specifically look at the right hand corner). And I do mean surfaced. This image was taken on March 29, 2007, from Grouse Mountain, Idaho, by The River Journal’s staff photographer Jay Mock and sent to Cryptomundo by “Surrealist Research Bureau” columnist Jody Forest. Obviously, then, Paddler is the real deal. Paddler, the Lake Pend Oreille Monster, does appear to exist. But is it merely a cover story for the use of Navy submarines or are submarine sightings being confused with actual lake monster accounts? In the early 1940s, near [...]
