Word out of Katmandu is that the US State Department today, April 24th, ordered all non-emergency US mission personnel and dependents to depart Nepal. This decision, made at the recommendation of the Embassy, was taken out of concern for the safety of US Government employees and their families. The US Mission includes the Embassy, its Consular Section and American Center in the Yak & Yeti Hotel, both of which have been closed until further notice. Ambassador James F. Moriarty, who informed the Mission community of the Embassy’s recommendation, also is recommending that all American citizens in Nepal should consider leaving [...]
Joyriding Johor and Neglecting Nepal
Who is trying to sell you on Nepalese non-protection and jumping on the Johor juggernaut? More adventures in forgetting history and spinning the media are in store for you today. You have to ask yourself, how long was it going to take before some official body in Malaysia declared their local version of the Bigfoot protected? How can humans protect an animal species before it is known to exist? Yes, these are all trick questions. Humans do things because they want to. Humans apparently think they can do anything they want to do. And one Bigfoot group’s media spin can [...]
Dog-Sized Monster Rabbit
Last week, in time for Easter thoughts of cuddly bunnies, images of armed hunters like this gentleman below, were broadcast around the world. The hunt for the giant rabbit said to be destroying the gardens of Felton, UK, was on. Under headlines like “Giant Rabbit Terrorizes Village” and “World Goes Crazy For Wor Rabbit,” the media informed an anxious public that: A “monster” rabbit has apparently been rampaging through vegetable patches in a small village in northern England, ripping up leeks, munching turnips and infuriating local gardeners. “They call it the monster. It’s very big — it’s nearly the size [...]
Leap The CryptoHaiku Carnivorous
As Cryptomundo readers might recall, I named Carnivorous Nights: On the Trail of the Tasmanian Tiger, one of the "Top Cryptozoology Books" of last year, specifically bestowing it as "The Best Cryptozoological Expedition Book of 2005." The book is by Margaret Mittelbach and Michael Crewdson (with illustrations by Alexis Rockman). The well-written record of three people tramping about on their quest is certainly an important volume for any cryptozoologist to read. For those especially interested in the Thylacine (a/k/a Tasmanian Tiger), of course, it is a must for your collection. You might be able to win a free copy. Now [...]
Another Ohio Bigfoot Outing
There always seems to be a lot of Bigfoot gatherings in Ohio in the spring. Here’s word of another set to happen on Saturday, April 29, 2006. According to a brief notice in the Sunday Cleveland Plain Dealer, there is to be a Bigfoot conference in Cambridge, Ohio: If you’ve ever wondered whether Sasquatch was real, you might be enlightened at this gathering at the Salt Fort State Park Resort & Conference Center (on U.S. 22). It will feature speakers, including some who will give eyewitness accounts, plus supposed photos of the beast. The conference is 4-10 p.m. and is [...]
First Sasquatch Expedition – 72 Years Ago Today!
Fresno [California] Bee April 9, 1934 Californians Out To Bag Legendary ‘Sasquatch’ VANCOUVER (B.C.), April 9. — (AP) — America’s first Sasquatch-catching expedition headed into the mountains of British Columbia today on a hunt for the horrible, hairy, naked bogey-man of Indian legend. J. F. Blakeney and C. K. Blakeney, brothers, of Sacramento, medical students at the University of California, read reports of frightened tribesmen that the giant body-snatcher of old had been seen recently in the mountains north of Harrison Lake and determined to attempt to photograph or lasso a "Sasquatch." The fabled Sasquatch, as described in Indian lore [...]
McGirk Exclusive: Tracks Like Giant Gorilla’s
“Myths do not leave footprints,” Vincent Chow told the media at the end of March 2006. A new expedition is in the works, and certainly there are no shortage of tracks being found in Malaysia. But who has been finding them, and where? And what do they say they look like, beyond the media hype? Today we take a moment to straighten out a bit of recent history from an informed point-of-view. In an exclusive interview with Jan McGirk, Southeast Asia Correspondent to the British newspaper, The Independent, Cryptomundo has obtained new details about the finds of “Bigfoot” tracks on [...]
New Mouse and Parrot Discovered
EurkeAlert is reporting two new species, a new mouse and a new parrot, have been discovered on a small island in the Philippines. ———————————————————————— Striking, color illustration of new parrot and mouse. Both these animals are endemic (found only there) to Camiguin Island in the Philippines. ———————————————————————— This island, Camiguin, is the smallest Philippine island, of which there are 7,000, known to support a bird or mammal species that is endemic (lives nowhere else). The scientists’ research, which is embargoed, is described in the April 5 issue of Fieldiana: Zoology, a peer-reviewed, scientific journal about biodiversity research published by The [...]
MA HB Ends
It is Friday, March 31 (a day I predicted on Wednesday we would hear about earthquakes). This day will see the hardcover and paperback editions of Mysterious America from Paraview go out of print. No more hardback copies of Mysterious America again. Famed natural history artist Alexis Rockman painted the cover depicting a real encounter he and his associates had with a giant catfish. Your last day to buy either paperbound or hardbound copies of Mysterious America online is today.
