The Maine Student Book Award Celebration (MSBAC) takes on a decidedly cryptozoological flavor this year. As you read this, I’m in northern Maine, in a secret location filled with librarians and children, getting ready or presently talking about cryptozoology, cryptids, and leading workshops with the kids on casting footprints during a full-day gathering. Actually, other than kidding about the “secret location,” all the rest is true. The MSBAC is occurring on Monday, May 5, 2008, in Penobscot, and I’m there right now, as this is being remotely posted. I’m on site with their out-of-state guest of honor, Kelly Milner Halls, [...]
Alaska’s Prehistoric Monster
Cryptotourism has been in play for ages, especially highlighted by such sites as Loch Ness, which boasts of Nessie. Smaller examples of monsters and places, such as the Lizard Man of South Carolina or Tessie of Lake Tahoe, dot the maps of the world. But a new trend is the recognition of cryptids, history, and places in various locations, often further overlooked. Glacier Island’s monster is one case that even turned up in the old Books of Charles Fort. In Mr. X’s Hypertext of the works of Charles Fort, he notes the passage from Lo!: It may be that there [...]
Parasitic Plant Rediscovered After 20 Years
A plant only its mother and father could love? It looks beautiful to me. This is a cryptobotany triumph. This rediscovered parasitic plant was found June 12, 2006, in Guerrero, Mexico, and not seen since 1985. Photograph by George Yatskievych. A scientist with the Missouri Botanical Garden has rediscovered and identified a rare parasitic plant that hasn’t been seen by botanists in more than 20 years. A single specimen of the plant was found in Mexico in 1985, but the plant wasn’t seen again until St. Louis botanist George Yatskievych and a colleague found it in a pine oak forest [...]
Chicago Cougar Was Wild
A 124-pound cougar shot by Chicago police earlier this month is the same wild animal that was spotted in southern Wisconsin in January, Cook County officials said today, April 30, 2008. DNA taken from the cat killed April 15 in Roscoe Village matches genetic material found in Rocky County, Wisconsin, following a cougar sighting there on January 15, 2008, authorities said. The test results also confirm that the male cat shot in Chicago was a wild, free-roaming cougar, not an escaped exotic pet, officials said. But more tests are still being done to determine where the big cat originated. The [...]
Hobbit Hoax Claim: “Complete Lunacy”
You may have heard that recently the Hobbit fossils, technically Homo floresiensis, were in the news due to the remarkable claim that they were hoaxes because the teeth showed dental work. What was incredible, as I read this, was that this new debunking was done on the basis of the skeptic’s visual examination of only the photographs of the teeth and other such non-first hand evidence. It sort of reminded me of claims about the Patterson-Gimlin footage being bogus based on bad published image prints that were enlarged on a photocopy machine, something that once did happen. I was waiting [...]
Radford Tries Being Scientific
Ben Radford tells us how his “science works.” “Lake Monsters I Have Known” sounds like the setup for a bad horror movie or an even worse children’s book. One thing it might not sound like is science. But without science, Ben Radford explained at a recent meeting of New Mexicans for Science and Reason, the stories of the Loch Ness monster and her kin spin out of control in a hurry. Monthly meetings of NMSR, as the organization is known by its members and friends, are the sorts of places you can go to learn about the truly strange — [...]
Three New Articerodes Discovered
New insects are literally found daily, by the hundreds every year. Cryptozoology, as I have noted, generally deals with the discovery of larger animals, mostly vertebrates, with the now-and-then large invertebrate, such as the giant squid (verified) and giant octopus (still an active cryptid). But, it appears the entomologists deserve their due sometimes. They need recognition as much as the next discoverers for find new species, and can generate publicity, especially if the new species are beautiful, unique, or strange to observe. It’s always been that way. To wit, some news out of the rainforests of Thailand calls our attention [...]
New Assiniboine Native Bigfoot Reports
The Assiniboine live in Montana. There’s breaking news from near Fort Belknap of new Bigfoot rumblings: There was a mystery afoot — err … a Bigfoot — and if anyone was going to solve it, it would be Ruben Horseman. The volunteer fire chief and self-described snoop, Horseman’s phone regularly rings when his Hays neighbors are trying to sort out a story. “There was a lot of little rumors at first,” he said. “That’s why I figured we’d go out there and walk it and see what we come up with.” Several people had spotted strange, very large prints in [...]
Cougar Killed in Chicago
“Cougars don’t exist in Illinois,” we have all been told for years, especially before two 21st century incidents began to alert people to the notion eyewitnesses seeing the cats weren’t crazy. “They are extinct in the state,” officialdom still claimed. Now, beyond belief, a cougar or puma or mountain lion, whatever you wish to call it, has been killed on the North Side of Chicago on April 14, 2008. Obtaining an actual body is the ultimate proof, of course. The Chicago Tribune’s photographer Candice C. Cusic snapped the images on Monday, which sum up the story (below), from the felid [...]
Yowie Photo
Sometimes everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon. Sometimes people are just in the right place at the right time. What is this episode all about? Tony Healy’s and Paul Cropper’s The Yowie: In Search of Australia’s Bigfoot has made these hairy hominoids quite popular in their own country and much more well-known around the world. More people are trying to get new pieces of evidence. Now comes word that one person says he has proof. Proof…Paul Compton with one of the photos that he believes backs up his personal claims of a giant Yowie-like animal living in the Glen [...]
