One of the most influential television writers of the 20th century and the writer of one of the most important motion pictures in Yeti cryptofiction has died. Earlier this year, I noted that director Val Guest died on May 10, 2006, in California. Now, Nigel has passed away. That would be Nigel Kneale, here pictured from the 1950s. At the Hammer Film’s site, in a remembrance there, writer Robert Simpson shares the sad news: Tom Kneale (better known as Nigel Kneale) died on Sunday 29 October 2006 aged 84. To many he was the godfather of television science fiction, a [...]
Wow! 100 New Species Found Off Hawaii
Everett, Washington’s Herald today publishes a summary ("Researchers find 100 new species off Hawaii") on the discovery of 100 new species found recently in the remote French Frigate Shoals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands: "There were lots of organisms that people were saying, ‘Wow! What’s that?’" said Joel Martin, a zoologist for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. Researchers returned from the voyage Sunday with at least 1,000 species of invertebrates, including worms, crabs and sea stars. About 160 unique species of seaweed were also found. Among the discoveries are multicolored worms; a bright purple, foot-long sea star; [...]
Dover Demon Again
The Boston Globe followed up their earlier story by publishing, on Halloween, Bill Bartlett’s black and white line drawing in a short article entitled "Ever seen the Dover Demon?" The Dover Demon lives on…
Halloween TV
As most of us have noticed, Halloween is a great time to catch up on all those documentaries or reality programming we didn’t see all year – or even for decades. Craig Woolheater’s image and mine have been rebroadcast all week, especially on the “Weird Travels” repeats. Here’s a few more to watch while you are waiting for the local trick or treaters to come around, or helping your own kids eat their candy. Dover Demon 2006
The Boston Sunday Globe Boston, Massachusetts Decades later, the Dover Demon still haunts By Mark Sullivan, Globe Correspondent October 29, 2006 Dover –Twenty-nine years later, William Bartlett stands by his story of what he saw on Farm Street that night. It was an eerie human-like creature, he said, about 4 feet tall with glowing orange eyes and no nose or mouth in a watermelon-shaped head. ‘‘I have no idea what it was,’’ Bartlett, now a 46-year-old artist living in Needham, said in a recent interview. ‘‘I definitely know I saw something.’’ The ‘‘Dover Demon’’ that Bartlett and two other teenagers [...]
Satyrs
Want to talk about a weird creature for Halloween? How about the really bizarre ones – the Goatmen, Hoofed Horrors, and other strange beasties that seem to have their legs on backwards and appear to have rigid feet? Is there another form of "Bigfoot" out there? One hominologist appears to think so, and a filmmaker has passed along new "old" stories for me, for us to ponder. Goatmen stories have been heard about in cryptid circles from such high profile locations as Maryland-Virginia, near Washington D. C. And, no, people weren’t talking about the politicians. Thirty years ago, I was [...]
Pondering OOP Dolphins and Manatees
What is to be made of the recent reports of river-dwelling manatees and now a dolphin? Have some of these known species been misidentified as cryptids in the past? Well, yes, they probably have been. First, let me share a mention of the newest account. Reporter Elizabeth Ratto of the Boston Globe writes that a “common dolphin” was sighted on Friday, October 27, 2006: …swimming in the Fore River, just outside the Braintree Yacht Club, until it exited Boston Harbor with high tide around 3 p.m., according to Tony LaCasse, spokesman for the New England Aquarium. The aquarium was alerted [...]
Loren Coleman’s Top Cryptids
Halloween 2006 seems as good a time as any to publish a response to several requests I have received lately for my top ten picks in cryptids, those animals that serve as the focus of cryptozoologists. Of course, thinking outside the lines, as I always do, I had to choose thirteen. Also, I had to create two parallel lists. One is for those supported by what I see as the most credible evidence, in my opinion only. For the other group, I see this one as viewed through the public’s eye, those most popular cryptids, monsters, crypto-creatures, or whatever the [...]
