What could be the source of the new sightings of striped mystery animals, detailed below? When is a striped mystery animal seen in Australia not automatically tied to the sightings of Thylacines? Apparently, it was bound to happen in this Year of Mange. You will note in this article the code word “mystery.” But you will not find anything about the Thylacine, by name, in the following article. I noted that cryptid in the headline to not ignore the most obvious unknown striped animal seen in Australia. However, Thylacines have black stripes on a brownish body, and the description is [...]
MonsterQuest: Mystery Cats
The program took on mangy dogs last week, so tonight it is about the phantom felines. Will the Mystery Cats be more exciting than the Mystery Canids? Will the words Panthera atrox come from the lips of anyone on this program? Will the black dead felid carcass turn out to be only a domestic cat’s, thus mirroring last week’s program? Will the viewers begin to figure out that one reason there are so many animal mysteries in Minnesota is because that’s where the film production company is located? It’s time for another “MonsterQuest.” Lions in the Suburbs – Attacks by [...]
Bizarre Bigfooter Bedfellows
Janice Carter Coy alleged meeting with the Bigfoot “Fox” in her house’s basement, April 2002. The netherworld of Bigfooters is known to have a few bizarre “marriages” and “divorces.” The unions and break-ups have been well-documented for such strange bedfellows as Peter Byrne and Ray Crowe, Jeff Meldrum and Matt Moneymaker, Tom Biscardi and Ray Crowe, Tom Biscardi and Tara Hauke, and Erik Beckjord and Tara Hauke. Now comes word that Jon-Erik Beckjord has joined with Janice Carter Coy, the co-author of 50 Years of Bigfoot: Tennessee Chronicles of Co-Existence, in some new cooperative efforts. They, for example, will be [...]
Shunka Wars
Lance Foster, myself, and others have looked for the mounted Shunka Warak’in for decades. I’ve written about it in columns, books, and blogs. Finally, after 121 years of it being missing-in-action, the taxidermy mount has surfaced. But guess what? There is a developing tug-of-war over who owns it, which state has the rights to it, and where it will end up. Jack Kirby with Island Park’s mystery animal. Bozeman Chronicle photo. I posted what Montana felt previously. Now here is the Idaho side of the story: The Sherwood Beast of Island Park legend and lore has been kidnapped! The stuffed [...]
First Film of Long-Eared Jerboa
Long-eared Jerboa (Euchoreutes naso). An “extraordinary” desert creature has been caught on camera for what scientists believe is the first time. The long-eared jerboa, a tiny nocturnal mammal that is dwarfed by its enormous ears, can be found in deserts in Mongolia and China. Zoological Society of London (ZSL) scientist Jonathan Baillie said the footage was helping researchers to learn more about the mysterious animal. The species is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red list. The unusual animals were filmed in the Gobi desert during an expedition led by Dr Baillie. Until now, the creatures had proven extremely difficult [...]
Wild People to Cal Gorilla: 1823-1870
Are old records of “wild people” and “gorillas” actually accounts of feral humans, fictional journalistic stories, escaped animals, or unknown hairy hominoids? Or a combination of several situations? You be the judge. The following reports are from Spain, India, Indiana, Missouri, and California. Of all of these, perhaps the only one that is well-known is the more Sasquatch-type case from 1870 California. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Anon. 1823. “Wild Woman” Bell’s Life in London and Sporting Chronicle (London, England) No. 47 (19/01/1823), p. 373. Christmas Author Quotation
Lauren Daley writes in the Standard-Times on December 9, 2007, of her recent interview with The Polar Express (1985) author Chris Van Allsburg, 58, of Providence, Rhode Island. Daley mentions a good quotation in Van Allsburg’s 1986 Caldecott Medal-winning acceptance for the now classic Christmas book: “A world that might have Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster is clearly superior to one that definitely does not.” Certainly, a world with cryptozoology in it appears to be one that is more hopeful about new animals and species, the human imagination and various possibilities, than one that only reflects some kind of [...]
Women in Cryptozoology: Jan McGirk in Johor
Flashback: Let us trek back to Johor with newswoman Jan McGirk and revisit the Malaysian situation before it got lost in the morass of the photo hoaxing, to the events surrounding the initial finding of the now famed track cast. Jan McGirk, on the right, assists with the casting compound, to mold the footprint she first found in Johor, the one often shown being held by Joshua Gates. ++++ The unknown world: How I tracked Bigfoot through the Malaysian jungle (by Jan McGirk). Giant Spitting Cobra Discovered
Richard Leakey has given an excellent quotation for reflection when thinking about the foundation pursuits of cryptozoology. With regard to this new discovery, Leakey has said: “There have to be many other unreported species.” True, indeed. A new giant species of spitting cobra — about 2.6 metres (8.5 feet) long and with enough venom to kill up to 20 people in one bite — has been discovered in Kenya, a study said Friday. The large brown spitting cobra, initially included under the black-necked spitting cobra species, was discovered at a snake farm in June 2004, but confirmed as a separate [...]
