As part of an EPSRC funded public understanding of science project, the University of St. Andrews has teamed up with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to produce a website dedicated to the statistics/biology behind whale surveys. Visitors (aged 16 -21) can play a computer game which takes them on a whale survey and explains how whale population numbers are actually estimated. The winner of the computer game (and a friend) can win the chance to go on an actual whale survey in the IFAW sail boat Song of the Whale at the end of the summer. The competition [...]
Pig Still On The Lamb
Jerry Hart gets ready to toss another dog treat to a wayward pig that showed up Thursday at the home of his mother, Pam Hart, on West River Road in Waterville. David Leaming/Blethen Maine News Service First seen running free last month at Colby College, the swine shows up four miles away and gets some cat and dog treats. Wow, the authorities can’t even catch a pig? How are we to expect them to capture Bigfoot? Amy Calder of the Blethen Maine News Service updates the search for the little pig that can’t be caught in the June 20, 2008, [...]
Radioactive Wisent?
The goverment of Ukraine intends to introduce a threatened species, the European bison or wisent (Bison bonasus), into the exclusion zone around the stricken Chernobyl nuclear reactor. The plan is to create a nature reserve where the bison can thrive in the absence of humans. The minister in charge of Chernobyl, Volodomir Shandra, says there are clean areas within the 30-kilometre radius where the pilot scheme could work. The wisent is the heaviest surviving land animal in Europe, a relic of the Pleistocene megafauna of Eurasia. A forest dwelling species, wisent were first scientifically described by Carolus Linnaeus in 1758. [...]

Supporters Rally to Bigfooter’s Defense
Bob Chance delivers one of his lectures on the historical Bigfoot in Maryland. If remarks to Cryptomundo are any sample, Bob Chance has a lot of understanding friends and fans. Members of the hominological, cryptozoological, civic, and environmentalist communities have lined up behind Bigfoot hunter Robert Chance. The Examiner published a followup article about Bob Chance on Friday, June 20, 2008. It shows a change in tone, and the contents do some justice to the reality of the situation. The headline, “Supporters Speak Out for Indicted Environmentalist,” demonstrates what I am hearing from the grassroots level (no pun intended), about [...]
The Cryptozoology Season
Is there a new public attack on the Bigfoot and Sasquatch research work of Grover Krantz to be launched soon in London? Or, actually, less melodramatically, what will be said? Cryptozoology Season at the Grant Museum: The Grant Museum is located at the University College London – Gower Street – London – WC1E 6BT – United Kingdom +44 (0)20 7679 2000. The Grant Museum is taking advantage of the popularity of “cryptozoology” by putting on a variety of lectures in what they call “The Cryptozoology Season.” I especially hope some learned cryptozoologists, hominologists, and colleagues get to hear the one [...]
Cryptic Cats Link Hostile Governments
It appears that elusive felines are behind a new bridge being built between two hostile governments. The governments, you ask? That would be Iran and the USA. Iran is believed to host the only 60 – 100 Asiatic cheetahs left in the wild. Some eke out a living in a forbidding terrain of jagged peaks, deep gorges and bone-dry plains in the Kuh-e Bafgh protected area in Yazd province in central Iran. The sleek and spotted cats once roamed between the Arabian peninsula and India, but their number in Iran is estimated to have fallen by roughly half in the [...]

Bigfooter Bob Chance Indicted
The breaking news headline I read this morning was unbelievable, for two reasons: (1) I knew, very well, the person charged, and (2) the media decided to highlight the fact the individual is a “Bigfoot hunter.” The Examiner headline shouted out: “Bel Air Bigfoot hunter indicted on charges of making drugs,” for June 19, 2008, in an article by Matthew Santoni. Many readers here are familiar with his name. I’ve known Bob Chance for years, since we both were long distance correspondents and friends of Ivan T. Sanderson, back in the 1960s, the good ole days of the Society for [...]
