First Bigfoot, Now A Wombat!
Did someone in New Zealand get wind of the “Molester Blames Bigfoot” story of last week, and decide to float the following about? Humm, I guess I could have posted this on my “copycat effect” blog. But it seems more likely that it is another one for the “humans-are-weird-animals” file. BTW, there are three kinds of wombats: The common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), also known as the naked nosed wombat or the forest wombat; the southern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons); and the critically endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii). The kind of wombat in this story was not defined. I share [...]
Elephant Artist Paints An Elephant
This is amazing, if it is true: Credit Cory Dortorow. Boing Boing had earlier dealt with elephants as artists and linked to the National Geographic article on elephants as musicians.
X-Files Monsters Return
Ten years after the last “X-Files” movie hit theaters, the team behind the hit sci-franchise is tossing out some tidbits about the sequel, currently scheduled for release on July 25, 2008. The film, which has not yet been named, will mark the return of David Duchovny as Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Scully, two FBI agents who investigate the paranormal. It is being directed by Chris Carter, creator of the series that ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002. “I know what I want it to be, but Fox has ideas of their own,” Carter said of the title. “I [...]
New Wolverine Photos
A wolverine has been captured on camera by an Oregon State student, Katie Moriarty. Confirming new photographs (below) have been recorded from the Tahoe National Forest in California, during mid-March 2008. Earlier, it was established this is the first wolverine verified in California since 1922. Side view of a wolverine photographed by a remotely triggered camera at a snare established, by another study, for the purpose of collecting hair from American martens. The snare is comprised of a black plastic base from which brass gun-cleaning brushes are attached. Bait, which is normally attached immediately above the marten hair snare, had [...]
Champ Video
Two years ago, in 2006, ABC-TV obtained for screening a video of a large object in Lake Champlain that was said to be Champ, originally taken in August 2005. (Please read more here, here, and here.) Now the entire video has become available, via YouTube. What do you Cryptomundians see in the video? (Please, for those that don’t yet understand all the otter jokes, do seriously share your sense of what this might be without a major side trek into otter-this-world humor.)
Sri Lanka’s Newest Shrew
The Greater White-toothed Shrew (Crocidura russula), shown above, is a small shrew found in Europe and North Africa, and related to the species newly discovered. A new, endemic species of shrew Crocidura hikmiya, has been described from Sri Lanka. The new shrew is presently only known from mid-montane and lowland rainforests of Sinharaja. This shrew was previously been identified as Ceylon Long-tailed Shrew (Crocidura miya). However the latter species is now believed to be confined to the montane forests of the central hills. The researchers believe that the most frequently encountered shrew in Sinharaja is the new species. This raises [...]
Strike the Sasquatch
A mascot inhabiting the Baseball Cryptozoo, with an identity from cryptozoology and hominology, gets a new name. The Northwest Arkansas Naturals announced earlier this month that the name of their furry, baseball-loving Sasquatch will hereby be known as “Strike.” Several hundred entries were submitted in the team’s “Name the Mascot” contest in January 2008. After the contest was completed, Naturals’ staff members selected from the top-five most frequent names submitted along with five other “wild-card” entries. Tanner Winn, from Happy Hollow Elementary School in Fayetteville, Arkansas, was the lone child who submitted the name Strike. Seven-year old Tanner will receive [...]
What’s Killing The Bats?
According to a new article, “Biologists seek clues as bats die off,” by John Richardson, in the Portland Press Herald, Portland, Maine, March 27, 2008, a mystery exists due to thousands of deaths this winter throughout the Northeast. These little brown bats, a species common to Maine, show symptoms of white-nose syndrome – rings of white fungus around the noses of hibernating bats. Courtesy New York Department of Environmental Conservation. Something is killing bats as they hibernate in parts of the Northeast, and biologists in Maine and other states are worried about what it could mean for natural systems that [...]
