As Cryptomundo readers know, especially from a recent blog entry, the Bates cryptozoology and art exhibition has moved to Kansas City, Missouri. Shown above, Marc Swanson’s White Yeti (a/k/a “Killing Moon”) is part of the exhibition, Cryptozoology: Out of Time Place Scale. The collection – from art from artists from around the world to nonfiction evidence & artifacts from my cryptozoology museum – opens in Missouri with a mini-symposium: A Cryptozoology Roundtable Conversation Date: October 26, 2006 Time: 7:00 pm Central Location: Epperson Auditorium, 4415 Warwick Blvd., Kansas City, Missouri Description: On the eve of the exhibition opening of “Cryptozoology: [...]
Mothman and Boston Rob
Looking ahead to next Wednesday’s "Mothman" episode of "Sci-Fi Investigates," here is today’s guest blog from John Frick, one of the cofounders of the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It has little to do with cryptozoology, but much to do with how this television program approached the subject. John Frick writes: On October 25, at 10 PM Eastern is the debut of the Mothman episode of "Sci-Fi Investigates" on the Sci-Fi channel. One of the principal investigators on the show is Boston Rob from "Survivor" fame, and he represents the critic. My brother, Tim, and I, once again [...]
Wildlife Experts Field Cryptid Questions
The Arizona Republic’s Kate Nolan has written an article on what kind of reaction eyewitnesses to strange creatures are receiving in Arizona: Part of being a wildlife expert in Arizona is fielding calls from people asking, "What the heck is that?" The Arizona Game and Fish Department gets more than 2,000 phone calls a year from people asking that or requesting help in handling wild animals. The state doesn’t keep track of how many, but some of the reported beasties can sound pretty weird – from the supposed "Bigfoot" that roamed Prescott to jumbo versions of most Arizona native species. [...]
That Mystery Fish Postcard
The Mystery Fish postcard, first noted here on November 29, 2005, has never been identified, as to exact location or species. New people sometimes have new ideas. (Click on image to see full size version, enhanced by shockbeton) Due to research (see below) on the type of postcard it is, there was a determination, thanks to Cryptomundo readers, that this specific item would have been produced between 1904-18. The location seems to be in the Pacific; perhaps it was taken in the Philippines. Or maybe even Florida? Someone said this might be during WWI, in the south of France, because [...]
Boston Rob Balks On Bigfoot
I’m on the road again, but don’t forget, as Craig mentions, to watch “Sci Fi Investigates: Bigfoot” tonight, October 18. The New York Daily News has an overview here. There’s one fragment they have as a sentence in their review that says it all: Smirking, most of the time, when he’s not laughing out loud at the absurd earnestness of his less skeptical expedition mates. I may agree with “Boston Rob” on his choice of a baseball team, but I don’t have to like the under-theme of ridicule in his show, as expressed most often non-verbally by Mr. Marino.
Bigfoot Bounty: A Year Later
Bigfoot Bounty A year after the one million dollar short-lived bounty for a Sasquatch photo, here’s a look back. Hasbro produced this set in 1973, demonstrating a lengthy awareness by the company into Yeti hunts. During mid-October 2005, a proposed $1 million reward for a photograph of evidence leading to the live capture of Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman (Yeti) or the Loch Ness Monster was discussed by the media, and caused quite a stir. Initially, the Bigfoot Bounty was to be used to announce Creature Appreciation Week later in the month, by the producers of the Duel Masters Trading Card [...]
California Cryptozoic
What: “CALIFORNIA CRYPTOZOIC” When: October 28 – November 25, 2006 Opening Saturday October 28, 9pm – Partytime Who: Artist Megan Whitmarsh (visit her site for her little Yeti film) Where: October, 28 2006 at the New Image Art Gallery, 7908 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90046 How Much: Free “Yeti does Disco” with bling bling or goes Star Wars, well, is sort of weird, I’d say. Or very normal, nowadays. After all, if Wikipedia has an entry on “bling bling” originating from Jamacian patois and noting the contradictory reality that the “bling bling diamonds” are probably conflict diamonds, obtained [...]
Mystery Beast Banner News
Wonderful news about the Maine Mystery Beast Banner from Boing Boing. David Pescovitz writes: Maine Mystery Beast banner to be donated to Loren Coleman’s museum On Friday, I posted about artist Paul Szauter’s beautiful Maine Mystery Beast sideshow banner that was to be auctioned off this afternoon. I suggested that the winner might donate it to cryptozoologist Loren Coleman’s International Cryptozoology Museum. Whaddayaknow! Journalist and blogger Rogier van Bakel won the banner and says he’ll do just that. What a generous, wonderful act-of-cryptozoological-kindness. See the rest of his entry here. Mucho thanks to David and Rogier!
New Maine Mystery Photos: Minot Beast
The woman in Minot, Maine, was out walking her mutt, which I will call a “mutt” instead of a “dog” for the stake of alliteration and to not overuse the word “dog.” But never mind. The animal walker saw the “thing” in the distance, and couldn’t quite believe her eyes. Thank goodness it was dead, she mumbled to herself. But amazingly, she had her camera along, and snapped some photos of the “Minot Beast” (above and below, click on them to make them larger, if you dare). With whom should she share these photos, she wondered. Ah, that crime beat [...]
