Monmouth County police are reporting a sighting of a large Mystery Mountain Lion or some kind of Phantom Panther around Dutch Lane, along the Colts Neck-Marlboro border, New Jersey, on May 1. Conservation officials studied a large paw print and took scat back for analysis. The State Division of Fish and Wildlife confirmed the paw print did come from a large cat, but they were not clear if the print belonged to a mountain lion. Besides reports from local ABC News and the Ashbury Park Press, Cryptomundo tipster Drew Vics says the local NY-NJ station 1010 WINS is reporting the [...]
Mitchell River Monster?
Editor Lee Murdock of Fly Fishing Magazine brings to our attention North Carolina’s Mitchell River Monster. Noting a North Carolina author who is writing about unusual sightings in the Carolinas, Murdock writes… What caught my eye about this one was the mention of one of our area’s delayed harvest rivers coupled with the word monster: "One of the most compelling and frightening of the stories is that of the Mitchell River monster, a strange, unnaturally tall, violent creature that appears beside a calm stream – or, sometimes, next to Poplar Springs Road." The Mitchell River is located in Surry County [...]
Andrews AFB’s Two Mystery Cats
I must say, we didn’t have to wait long for some interesting new Mystery Cat reports, did we? On Thursday, April 27, 2006, FoxNews began reporting that two “wild cats” have been spotted at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland (home to Air Force One), according to media watchdog Bufo Calvin. One of the “wild cats” was later reported to be brown, and the other one, black, according to the media. Calvin mentioned that this was “somewhat reminiscent of a search on a military base that happened in my area (the Mt. Diablo region of the San Francisco East Bay) [...]
Increase in Mystery Cat Encounters?
Is there an increase in Cryptid Cat activity occurring in North America this spring? If so, local officials aren’t sure how to quite handle it yet – with humor or by setting traps. A video of a cougar or mountain lion taken in Willmar, Minnesota, lead to the capture of the animal on February 1, 2006. Most people didn’t believe the reported cat was anything more than a figment of people’s imagination before the video. On Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the mayor of Montgomery, New Jersey, cracked a joke, saying "We are the Land of the Cougars" (alluding to the [...]

After going part of the distance he was stopped by a strange animal in the road which disputed the right of way with him. Having no weapon with which to enforce his own rights Mr. Fowler returned to Molunkus and passed [...]
Leap The CryptoHaiku Carnivorous
As Cryptomundo readers might recall, I named Carnivorous Nights: On the Trail of the Tasmanian Tiger, one of the "Top Cryptozoology Books" of last year, specifically bestowing it as "The Best Cryptozoological Expedition Book of 2005." The book is by Margaret Mittelbach and Michael Crewdson (with illustrations by Alexis Rockman). The well-written record of three people tramping about on their quest is certainly an important volume for any cryptozoologist to read. For those especially interested in the Thylacine (a/k/a Tasmanian Tiger), of course, it is a must for your collection. You might be able to win a free copy. Now [...]
Wanted: Witness Drawings for CryptoExhibit
It is preparation crunchtime here for the forthcoming “Cryptozoology: Out of Time Space Scale” exhibition, at Bates College’s Museum of Art, showing from June 24 to October 7, 2006. The exhibition travels to the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute, from late October to December 2006. For insights into how this exhibition’s symposium somewhat symbolized the “kick off” to the last six month’s incredible interest in cryptozoology and cryptids, see David Pescovitz’s Boing Boing posting on October 3, 2005, and Wired News reporter Mark Baard’s oft-quoted “America Goes Cryptozoology Crazy” of November 1, 2005. At Bates, I [...]
