Various interviews I’ve had with St. Johns River and Lake Monroe area residents who remember the news reports from the 1950s still do feel that the reports were merely “Northern” tourists who saw unusual (but known) animals in the local waters. The number one candidate: manatee. Manatees generally do stay below the surface, but have to come up for air, of course. Reflective of the lower population density in the 1950s, they may have been a rather surprising sight. Some manatees do, also, have light gray to pinkish looking skin, in various light or water conditions. There are five species [...]
Bladenboro Beast Is Back
As the North American warm weather develops and the two new cryptozoology television series, “MonsterQuest” and “Destination Truth” battle for ratings heats cryptid matters, it will be worth our time to notice how many media mentions are generated by these two programs. For example, the Beast of Bladenboro article below appears to have been written because of the documentary filmmakers renewing investigations of the old stories as due to any new reports. If the tourist development success seen in such locations as Bladenboro or ones like in Point Pleasant, we should not be surprised to see other rural towns sharing [...]
Mysteries of the Oimyakon Baby Mammoth
This is not the Oimyakon mammoth, but a better preserved specimen being studied in 2007. It was found by hunter Yuri Khudi in Russia’s Arctic Yamalo-Nenetsk region, in May 2007. On September 27, 2004, the front part of a baby mammoth’s body was found in Olchan mine in the Oimyakon Region of Yakutia. Specialists of the Museum of Mammoth of the Institute of Applied Ecology of the North, Academy of Sciences of Sakha Republic (Yakutia), have been thoroughly studying the finding and they have published the first outcomes. Not the Oimayakon specimen; a group of scientists examines the 2007 Yamalo-Neneetsk [...]
Bigfoot & Dranginis in the Classroom
Bigfooter William Dranginis of Manassas, Virginia, shares the following experience about his time using Bigfoot in the classroom: I was contacted by a local Science teacher a couple years ago and asked to come to her class and speak to them about the Bigfoot creatures and how one goes about researching a creature that the scientific community says does not exist. We discussed scientific methodology and how some Bigfoot researchers use this methodology in our research. We also discussed equipment researcher’s use in their quest, I even brought down the Bigfoot Research vehicle and allowed them to operate the thermal [...]
Pinky Expedition: High Walking
In the quest for cryptids, various lines of inquiry usually are pursued to discover the realm of mundane observations that may have been converted into the extraordinary. Today, I look at the role of crocodilians, especially the American alligator, in any confusion with Pinky. Since coming to Florida, including observations this year, I’ve now viewed hundreds of individual alligators. In the Everglades in the 1970s, I saw American crocodiles in the wild too. This year during this Pinky expedition, I’ve watched many gators in the early morning ~ resting and warming up to actively feed later. Along the St. Johns [...]
Happy Birthday, Scott T. Norman
It seems most appropriate that as I find myself trying to unravel the tales and sightings of a decidedly unique series of sightings of a seemingly “American dinosaur species,” a living one at that, my thoughts would turn to the late dino hunter, Scott Thomas Norman. Scott would have been 44 years old today, March 15, 2008. He was a good and decent person. As we use to say in the Midwest, Scott was “good people.” Sometimes he found himself surrounded by ridicule mongers and worse. He calmly plowed ahead, nevertheless, turning the other cheek. These screen captures are from [...]
Pinky Expedition: Investigative Breakthrough
Sometimes when investigating cryptids, it’s not how you ask but who and what you are asking about that gets some more insightful answers. It was a good day in the Pinky expedition journey. On Thursday, March 13, 2008, besides checking out more wildlife along the St. Johns River and at the Zoological Park of Sanford, I had a major investigative breakthrough. I decided to stop by the Historical Society of Sanford, to ask about sightings of “Pinky,” the alleged dinosaur of Florida. I was interested to find out if any old news archives might exist. What I stumbled into was [...]
