Speaking in Texas on June 3, 2006, here’s a sneak peek at what I’ll be showing related to the 2004 Jennifer Ward sighting of the Green Swamp Ape. Jennifer Ward’s sighting has been difficult to understand, and place in context. But I think it has a lot to do with how shocking her initial drawing was. Her first attempt to draw the creature was elementary, but especially surprising in one detail: the light patches encircling the eyes. Made bigger and colored by some media, it became the definitive image with the sighting. Cryptozoologist Scott Marlowe, however, brought her together with [...]
Greenwich Cougar “Credible”
According to local media reports of June 1, 2006, a “cougar” is being seen near Greenwich, New Jersey. The police are taking the sightings seriously because they’ve seen them too. Since May 11, nine people have said they’ve seen a large cat roaming in several areas of the township, including near a day-care center, a youth-sports complex, and the DuPont Repauno Plant. A police officer has been assigned to patrol the area on a bicycle. Two police officers saw the cougar in broad daylight. One saw it chasing a herd of deer, [Detective Sgt. Joseph ] Giordano said. “Every one [...]
Off to Texas
On Saturday, June 3, 2006, I’ll be giving a talk at the University of Texas in San Antonio, Texas, on "Malaysian Mawas, Flores Hobbits, and Witness Drawings from a Cryptozoological Point of View." I hope to see some Cryptomundo readers there. I’ll be happy to sign your books or talk about the latest cryptozoo news. For more on the event, see here.
Indonesian Coelacanth Filmed
Updated at 11:15 PM, May 31, 2006, plus image. A capture of an image from the Japanese research team videotape of a one-meter long coelacanth taken off Indonesia on May 30, 2006. No date for the release of the video has been given. Robin Stobbs, a coelacanth researcher in South Africa, has informed me that an individual of the Indonesian coelacanth was filmed at the depth of 170 m, 17, at 8:30 am on May 30, 2006, off shore Buol, about 350 km west from Manado, Sulawesi Island, with a ROV operated by the Aquamarine Fukushima Survey team. This town [...]
“Fence Fiend” Just Sighted
This “Fence Fiend” was seen in Illinois merely days ago. It may still be out there. What could it be? There’s a breaking sighting that just occurred in the 309 Area Code region. Some encounters don’t easily sort out as a Bigfoot versus some kind of other cryptid, without going through hours of work, including site examinations, eyewitness background checks, interviews, comparisons with other reports, and more. Taking that all into account, nevertheless, I thought I would share the initial wave of early notes on this encounter, as a Cryptomundo demonstration of how word often comes to me and how [...]
Bizarre Baffin Skull
The "what-are-theys" are happening faster than I can post them all before my trip to Texas this week to speak at the Bigfoot exhibit at UT. Now comes this Baffin Island mystery. Here’s another one for May 30th. Canadian Canoe reporter John Thompson, through a dispatch from Iqaluit writes: A mysterious skull discovered on the edge of the Arctic Circle has sparked interest in what creatures roamed Baffin Island in the distant past, and what life a warming climate may support in the future. Andrew Dialla, a resident of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, says he found the skull protruding from the frozen [...]
Mothman Pizza
Now there’s something to eat in honor of John A. Keel. The Charleston Daily Mail is running a story on May 30, 2006, about Point Pleasant’s Village Pizza Inn making the “scariest pizza you’ve ever seen.” Apparently, it is a local secret as the specialty doesn’t actually appear on the printed menu — but it is made on request. Dubbed the “Mothman Pizza,” this round 19-inch pie features the winged, crimson-eyed creature atop its crisp, crunchy dough. Here’s what Mr. Mothman looks like in edible pizza form: His eyes are two round red cherry peppers with tiny green olives as [...]
Chinese What-Is-It
There is a May 30, 2006, news item that is one of those tidbits that have you scratching your head. It is running in the China Daily under the headline "Bizarre Creature Puzzles Thousands." The entire article (note: it sometimes becomes a deadlink, having mysteriously vanished 12 hours after it was first published) reads: Thousands of residents of Tianmen, Hubei Province, have flocked to see a rare turtle-like creature caught by an elderly man in a nearby reservoir. Some think that the animal, weighing in at 8.3 kilograms, looks like an alligator. It has three rows of horns on its [...]
Abominable’s Paul Gleason Dies
Known and remembered for his dozens of character roles, such as the angry high school principal in The Breakfast Club to the teacher in National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, actor Paul Gleason, 67, died May 27, 2006. Shortly before his death, Gleason appeared as the no-nonsense disbelieving Sheriff Halderman in Ryan Schifrin’s Abominable (2006), which aired in May 2006, on the SciFi Channel. He is shown in the role drinking from a cup with part of the slogan he made famous from this line: "Don’t mess with the bull, young man. You’ll get the horns."– Principal Vernon in The Breakfast Club. [...]
Wisconsin Bigfoot’s Bad Hair Day
Former newspaper reporter and current Wisconsin cryptozoological author Linda Godfrey was able to get the late 2005 sighting of Matt Wakeley in her new book, Hunting the American Werewolf, published in March 2006. But it wasn’t until recently that she was able to sit down with the eyewitness and turn his description into a forensically-correct drawing. Here is the result: Wakely’s sighting took place near White Pigeon Road and Highway B, in southeastern Walworth County, Wisconsin, last fall. But as the author of the successful 2003 book, The Beast of Bray Road, Godfrey writes: “I’d like to make it very [...]
