Quote of the Month About the Kiwi Hoax
“You know you’re a dick when geeks who believe in monsters seem cooler than you.” – Frank Lewis in Cleveland Scene.

Doug Hajicek (above), the creator and executive producer of “MonsterQuest” (which is regularly broadcast Wednesday nights on History) has issued the following comment in response to “Kiwi Hoaxes Ohio Bigfoot Conference.”
First, here is a bit of background. Hajicek had been listed in the online published agenda of the annual Bigfoot conference in Ohio as a speaker. The event occurred the weekend of May 2-3, 2009.
In the Sunday, May 10, 2009, New Zealand Herald article that revealed the Ohio gathering had been the butt of a Kiwi hoax, the “comedian” Leigh Hart wrote, specifically:
The keynote speaker for the evening was supposed to be the director of the documentary series Monster Quest, so you can imagine the disappointment when he decided not to show up.
I saw an opportunity, and volunteered to speak. I began by introducing myself as a director from New Zealand, then proceeded to educate the KFC-eating audience about the KFC-eating Waitakere Yeti. Borrowing from the American Indian “Sasquatch” legend I told them that our native Maori had encountered the beast more than 400 years ago and affectionately called him Ngawa Whakata Cafe, which loosely translates into “large, hairy, coffee-coloured man”. The fact that coffee had only been in the country for 150 years or so was a detail that didn’t seem to bother them.
I told them that our beast was less shy than theirs and had been known to rape campers or trampers, the most documented case been that of Travis Collins who was raped by the beast, not once but three times over a four-year period.
They also believed that back in New Zealand I currently ran the largest faeces analysis machine in the world, giving me a standing ovation when I finally left the podium.
Doug Hajicek (shown above, left) sent along the following, as his comment:
I really enjoy conferences like these! When I commit to an event I am very reliable by nature; unfortunately my schedule is pretty crazy right now.
I never committed to this event. I told [that to] the organizer right away when I was invited to attend. I communicated to the organizer that I could not commit but would let him know close to the date of the Conference and I would just drive down or make my own travel arrangements if I could go. They were fully aware that my tight schedule and commitments with the show need to come first. I should have been listed as a tentative guest only.
I then told them in writing 5 days before I could not attend, with regrets. This was certainly not a no-show situation at all. I did not get a response from them in return. I also was not aware they had even listed me to speak until 4 days before the event.
I certainly would of enjoyed attending that conference and apologize for any missed communication on my part.
Thanks for the heads up as always. Doug Hajicek
