Greater Bamboo Lemurs (Prolemur simus). Recent discovery, Lemur, Primate, Madagascar. The Greater Bamboo Lemurs lives in a maze of bamboo in the rainforests of Madagascar. These primates are the only lemurs being able to crack the hard fibers of giant bamboo that are their favored food. Copyright: Jonathan Linus Fiely Scientists have confirmed the existence of a previously unknown population of Greater bamboo lemurs in Madagascar more than 400 kilometres from the only other place where the Critically Endangered species is known to live, greatly raising hopes for its survival. The researchers believe there are 30-40 greater bamboo lemurs in [...]
New Manta Ray Discovered
The newly-discovered larger, migratory manta ray (top) and the common, resident species (below) A new species of manta ray has been identified for the first time. After five years of study a marine biologist has confirmed that a larger and more elusive manta is in fact a distinct species. Until now it was thought that there was only one manta ray species. The newly-discovered species leads a different lifestyle to its smaller cousin and is migratory rather than residential. Andrea Marshall is a PhD marine biologist sponsored by the Save Our Seas Foundation (SOSF) to advance scientific knowledge of the [...]
The Reality of Post-Heuvelmans Discoveries
On July 20 and 21, 2008, I address public and staff attendees at three talks I am giving at the Royal Alberta Museum. I will be discussing the tenets of cryptozoology, and sharing historical information. In recent talks I have delivered at Bates College’s Symposium on Cryptozoology and at the American Museum of Natural History, a frequent question has resurfaced regarding discoveries and the works of Bernard Heuvelmans. In this new presentation, in a subsection delivered in Alberta, and hencefore, I will be directly responding to one criticism of cryptozoology I feel needs to be seriously answered, once and for [...]
New Mouse Lemur Discovered
This is an illustration of different species of endemic mouse lemurs (Microcebus) occurring in the western half of Madagascar. Microcebus are the world’s smallest living primates and some species are limited to small geographic areas, which is known as micro-endemism. The Wood Bison Discovery Story
Could a bunch of large, hairy, near-human ape-men, or hirsute giants, be living unfound in America? A parallel story from just fifty years ago, suggests that this is a very real possibility. The largest land animal in Canada, the wood bison [shown above], had been disappearing from all over North America for centuries when the last animals were officially declared extinct in 1940. Then in 1957, a wonderful discovery occurred. During a regular air patrol, federal wildlife officers flying over a remote part of the Wood Buffalo National Park, Alberta, spotted a small, isolated herd of two hundred wood bison. [...]
New Crayfish Species Discovery
In 2005, a new species of crayfish, Cambarus (Tubericambarus) polychromatus (the painted-hand mudbug) was described by Roger Thoma, Raymond Jezerinac and Thomas Simon in volume 118 issue 2 of the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington. Specifically, the cited journal article is: Thoma R.F., Jezerinac, R.F., and Simon, T. P. 2005. “Cambarus (Tubericambarus) polychromatus (Decapoda: Cambaridae), a new species of crayfish from the United States. Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington 118(2):326-336. Now, this new species has been identified from southern Illinois, according to the US Forest Service’s Mike Welker on June 30, 2008: The Cambarus polychromatus, commonly [...]
Giant Squid Found Off California
Only the fourth specimen of a giant squid, genus Architeuthis, to be found off the coast of California, near Santa Cruz, was discovered on Thursday, June 26, 2008.
New Big-Headed Fanged Frog Discovered
Above: The newly described Limnonectes megastomais McLeod, 2008. Photographed at SERS in central east Thailand. John C. Murphy. On the right the fang-like odontoid processes are clearly visible in the lower jaw. A new species of dicroglossid frog in the genus Limnonectes has been described from three forested locations in eastern Thailand by D. S. McLeod of the University of Kansas. The species appears to be a sit and wait predator that feeds on insects, other frogs, and birds. The author writes, “The most striking characteristics of the males of this species are their exceptionally large mouths and powerful jaws. [...]
Oldest 4-Legged Creature Found
Ventastega curonica would have looked similar to a small alligator. Scientists unearthed a skull of the most primitive four-legged creature in history, said a study in the June 26, 2008 issue of the journal Nature. The well-preserved remains, discovered from 370-million-year-old rocks in the country of Latvia, has features of both water (fish) and land (reptilian) animals. The fierce-looking creature probably swam through shallow brackish waters, measured about one meter long and ate other fish, scientists said in the study. “If you saw it from a distance, it would look like a small alligator, but if you look closer you [...]
Longing for Linsangs
What is one of the world’s rarest carnivores? It’s the linsang. But what’s a linsang? Of the figurine collection above, can you pick out the linsang? (The answer is below, as I share images of almost a dozen of these animal replicas for this discussion, in the last third of this posting.) During my trek in pursuit of replicas of the most unusual cryptids and animals, I made an amazing discovery of this scarce animal and its kin modeled as hand-painted small figurines. How is it that an animal so near extinction but unknown generally would have a replica made [...]
