The search has begun for the ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) on Cuba, late in April 2006. Cuban ornithologists have received permission to search for the long-lost, ivory-billed woodpecker in heavily wooded areas of the island that have been off-limits even to scientists since Fidel Castro seized power here almost 50 years ago. Backed by a grant from Birdlife International, a British conservation group, the search began in the pine forests of the Sierra Maestra mountains of eastern Cuba this week. Report: Cubanet. Meanwhile, the active search for the Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis) – pictured above – the world’s largest species [...]
Increase in Mystery Cat Encounters?
Is there an increase in Cryptid Cat activity occurring in North America this spring? If so, local officials aren’t sure how to quite handle it yet – with humor or by setting traps. A video of a cougar or mountain lion taken in Willmar, Minnesota, lead to the capture of the animal on February 1, 2006. Most people didn’t believe the reported cat was anything more than a figment of people’s imagination before the video. On Wednesday, April 26, 2006, the mayor of Montgomery, New Jersey, cracked a joke, saying "We are the Land of the Cougars" (alluding to the [...]
New Coelacanths On Display
Two new exhibitions of coelacanths are worthy of noting. The celebrated story of the coelacanth has made it one of the darlings of cryptozoology. It embodies a true tale of a “living fossil,” not verified as a “real animal” by science for 65 million years, then discovered off Africa in 1938 and rediscovered, with great fanfare, again in 1952 (as shown above). The coelacanth was a fish known to the natives, and eaten, with some slight disgust because it was too oily. It was a part of the menu of fishing peoples for centuries off Africa, long before it became [...]
New Asian Species
More species are being found, anew, in south Asia. We can hardly keep up with the announcements. Here’s a quick overview with some photos and links to the source articles. A new species of freshwater stringray (pictured here) has been discovered in Thailand. One of the discoveries was the remarkable Himanturan kittipongi, a new species of freshwater stringray from Thailand. Meanwhile, in Laos, six new species of frogs have been found. One is shown. Laos is the least densely populated country in Asia and has produced a treasure trove of wildlife discoveries during recent years. Rana khalam is one of [...]
Bobby Clarke Video: A Year Later
Exactly a year ago, on April 22, 2005, the story of Bobby Clarke’s Manitoba Sasquatch video broke in the news. The beginning of the story had begun earlier, of course. At dawn on Saturday, April 16, 2005, Bobby Clarke, a Manitoba ferryboat driver and Native of the Norway House Cree First Nation, was doing his job when he noticed something, a "big, black figure," "a massive creature" on the opposite bank of the Nelson River, about 300 meters (over 900 feet) away. Clarke had an old camcorder on board to record any wildlife he saw, so he picked it up [...]
Joyriding Johor and Neglecting Nepal
Who is trying to sell you on Nepalese non-protection and jumping on the Johor juggernaut? More adventures in forgetting history and spinning the media are in store for you today. You have to ask yourself, how long was it going to take before some official body in Malaysia declared their local version of the Bigfoot protected? How can humans protect an animal species before it is known to exist? Yes, these are all trick questions. Humans do things because they want to. Humans apparently think they can do anything they want to do. And one Bigfoot group’s media spin can [...]
Mawas = Orangutan Poached?
Are reports of the Johor Bigfoot baby being captured, then denied, actually based on some poaching activity of out-of-place orangutans with a new range in Malaysia? – Loren Poser over baby Bigfoot poachers 21 Apr 2006 R. Sittamparam ———————————————————————— KOTA TINGGI: Could the people in four-wheel-drive vehicles and a truck purportedly carrying a baby Bigfoot, who dropped in for dinner at a restaurant at a rest area at Felda Tenggaroh 2 here last month, be poachers? This is the question on the minds of people at the rest area who saw the group of about 20 men and their vehicles [...]
It’s Showtime Sonoma: Fakery, False Claims, and Fistfights?
Remember the “Snow Walker” footage of a “Yeti in a snowfield.” It turned out to be a fake that the producers of Paranormal Borderland, an old UPN program that lasted about two episodes, created to boost the ratings of their first show. Now the obnoxious Penn & Teller and their BS Showtime Network program are claiming to have done something similar. Do they want news outlets such as Cryptomundo to talk about them because we have ignored them so well? Of course they do. A teaser digital preview for their forthcoming “cryptozoology” episode on Showtime is broadcasting that they faked [...]
Needed: Useful Info From Johor
The New Straits Times had a very short article about the Malaysian Bigfoot on April 11, 2006. It was given with various headlines in different editions, one being “Information on Bigfoot comes at a price.” This news item quoted the opinion of, as they termed him, “Bigfoot enthusiast” and biodiversity researcher Vincent Chow. He “claimed the villagers were not as forthcoming with information as before but the minute they were paid, they became very helpful and vocal.” Meanwhile, Independent reporter Jan McGirk informs me that the famed cast of the Johor Bigfoot is still the possesion of the SPI team [...]
Jersey Devil and Ivan T. Sanderson
One January night in 1909, E. P. Weeden of the Trenton, New Jersey City Council bolted upright in bed when he heard someone trying to break down his door. It was a most unusual “someone,” apparently, because Weeden also heard distinctly the sound of flapping wings. Councilman Weeden rushed to his second-floor window and looked outside. He did not see the intruder, but the sight that greeted his eyes chilled him far more than the icy temperature ever could: In the snow on the roof of his house something had left a line of tracks. And whatever that “something” was, [...]
