Random Notes from Texas June 2, 2006 As Craig Woolheater said to Skeptical Inquirer’s Ben Radford and me, after circling for the third time to get a drive-by view of the Alamo, "Now, we can remember the Alamo!" To me, the thing I think that I will most remember about San Antonio is the quite impressive Bigfoot exhibition that Craig has stimulated via curator Willie Mendez at the University of Texas San Antonio’s Institute of Texan Cultures. We got a sneak preview Friday night. As you walk into the darkened beginning section of the huge display, you are taken down [...]
Peter Brown on Hobbits, Ebu Gogo, and Bigfoot
Peter Brown has spoken before of the interrelationship between the media-named "Hobbits," Flores’ ebu gogo, and Bigfoot. In an interview for Scientific American in 2004, the discoverer of Homo floresiensis was asked, Certainly by the time of LB1, people had well-developed language and oral traditions. Might encounters with humans like LB1 and other, unknown, island forms be the source of mythologies that are so widespread in the world today involving very tiny people and very large people? Brown’s reply: You pick a country and there’s either large Bigfoot and Yetis, or small leprechauns and Yowies, depending on which part of [...]
Another Malaysian Mawas Book With Photos?!!
Oh no, more hype on the Johor Mawas? My goodness, those Malaysian media folks are drumming up more interest in their local "Bigfoot" again. How dare they? Are they just trying to stir up folks at Cryptomundo? And now they are talking about two books? And is this a new cryptid name, Orang Lenggor? What’s up with all of this as we go six months deep into this story? Haven’t we been here before? Yes, but, hey, is there different information that exists in the news? Well, that’s why we are reporting on it here. A new article published on [...]
Thunderbird Film Discovered
Wisconsin writer and investigator Todd Roll has discovered an early forgotten, overlooked film that coincidentally appeared as a precursor to the famous Thunderbird flap in the 1970s. The movie was released in 1974, and entitled The Legend of Hillbilly John. Three years later, with the attempted airborne abduction of Marlon Lowe by two giant birds at Lawndale, Illinois, on July 25, 1977, the modern era of Thunderbird sightings began. The first investigator on the scene was my brother, Jerry, and the first write-up of the case came from his rough notes in Creatures of the Outer Edge. Based on a [...]
Menehune Today
I had an excellent time on The Coast to Coast AM radio program (gulp, from 2 am to 5 am my time!) last night. George Noory and I shared high energy, great fun, and we moved through several topics you’ve been reading about here at Cryptomundo (e.g. Malaysian Mawas, Mt. Hood Bigfoot, Argentina Lake Monster, Thunderbird, Mothman, and Lizardmen). The crypto-cat fight was even briefly mentioned. In the last hour, we also had wonderful callers. A recap of the program and link to the audio in their archives can be found here. The first caller was a remarkable one. The [...]
From Russia, With Love
Message from Russian Hominologists to Malaysian Colleagues Dear Vincent Chow, May I warmly congratulate you and your Malaysian colleagues on a marvelous, most important and long expected achievement — getting clear photographs of what we call homins (our technical,”professional” jargon term for relict hominids). Back in 1963, my teacher of hominology, the late Professor Boris Porshnev, proposed and urged the use of photography as a means of solution of the relict hominid problem. I followed his advice and argued for this method in the book To Kill or To Film? The Problem of Proof, 2000, against those who insist on [...]
Meandrous Monster Migrates to Utah Lake
A week ago it was mentioned here that D. Robert Carter wrote an article in the Provo, Utah Daily Herald, entitled “Mysterious Monsters Inhabited Utah Valley Waters.” Today, Sunday, May 07, 2006, part two, "The Meandrous Monster Migrates to Utah Lake" has been published. The article gives a good overview. Also the possible mammalian nature of the Bear Lake Monster is reinforced with various passages recalled, as per this item extracted. A May 18, 1874, letter from William Budge, who lived in Paris, Idaho, told of a monster sighting on Bear Lake. Budge, William Broomhead, and Molando Pratt were returning [...]
Mitchell River Monster?
Editor Lee Murdock of Fly Fishing Magazine brings to our attention North Carolina’s Mitchell River Monster. Noting a North Carolina author who is writing about unusual sightings in the Carolinas, Murdock writes… What caught my eye about this one was the mention of one of our area’s delayed harvest rivers coupled with the word monster: "One of the most compelling and frightening of the stories is that of the Mitchell River monster, a strange, unnaturally tall, violent creature that appears beside a calm stream – or, sometimes, next to Poplar Springs Road." The Mitchell River is located in Surry County [...]
Why Bear Lake Again?
In a look at Water Babies and, of course, the Bear Lake Monsters, D. Robert Carter has written a new article in the Provo, Utah Daily Herald, entitled “Mysterious Monsters Inhabited Utah Valley Waters,” published, according to google news alerts, a little after midnight, local time, Sunday, April 30, 2006. The “Pawapicts, or Water Babies, whom native Americans believed inhabited the waters of Utah Lake, Provo River and other aqua pura” are said to come “in various shapes and sizes. Most Ute accounts agree that they had long black hair and cried like infants.” The stories overlap with Merbeing lore. [...]
Manimal – The Conclusion
Is Manimal More Man Than Animal? by Dmitri Bayanov © 2006 International Center of Hominology Moscow, Russia Conclusion It is said that the significance of a scientific theory can be measured by the time it impeded scientific progress. Let’s hope the “ape model” theory won’t go down in history as very significant in this respect. Still it plays a major part in causing the Bigfoot research community to turn the blind eye to the Carter Farm case and the book 50 Years with Bigfoot: Tennessee Chronicles of Co-Existence. In my opinion, after this book business as usual is not on [...]
