Now in its fourth month, Asia’s latest "Bigfoot" flap keeps on rolling. What can be learned from how the media is handling the story via the evolving names being used? Are there the hints of ridicule and racism, in the routine being revealed? The Malaysian "Bigfoot," as a labeled cryptid, is slowly merging with various attributed "local" designations that are slipping into the stories. The name that is being picked most often reveals a developing story that moves the examination of the sightings from a more tangible cryptozoological landscape into a media-friendly "legendary status," with a hint of xenophobia. At [...]
Creatures of the Outer Edge
I am happy to announce that my first two books, The Unidentified and Creatures of the Outer Edge, with Jerome Clark, long out of print, are now back. First appearing in 1975 and 1978, these two classics have now been published as a special double edition with a new introduction. The Unidentified and Creatures of the Outer Edge: The Early Works of Jerome Clark and Loren Coleman is a new quality paperbound book from Anomalist Books. The Unidentified has intriguing, limited, and marginal information on cryptozoology. Historically, Creatures of the Outer Edge is more significant, in terms of looking at [...]
ABC Ridicules Bigfoot & Travel Channel Doesn’t
Over the weekend and into today, you’ve probably continued to read and hear a great deal about the so-called "Bigfoot" activity in Malaysia. Most of the articles have been rehashed treatments. Some have been reasonable, especially the news items written closer to the core of the activities. A few have even contained new info, as already mentioned here. But unfortunately, now that the Americans are more widely reporting on it, with increased frequently, the anchor people are laughing about it and saying things like the "family of the cameraman who filmed the Bigfoot with Roger Patterson," confessed it was all [...]
More Good “Bigfoot” News Out of Malaysia
One of the great things about the explosion of media interest in the "Bigfoot" stories out of Malaysia is that the papers have to come up with more and more details to keep the interest level of their articles sharp. And these news items gives us the opportunity to learn more new news, and some old too. This weekend, of course, we’ve seen recycled stories of the last two weeks – expeditions planned, expedition delayed, teams to investigate – so much so that the media is losing track of the chronology. What seems certain is that officials in Malaysia are [...]
Sasquatch Wins At Slamdance
The independent film that I hinted we should all watch for its impact on hominology has been declared an audience favorite during its first screenings. Slamdance Film Festival is an indie film competition held in Utah around the time as the famed Sundance Film Festival. It has, in recent years, produced winning films that go on to success. In a press release announcing the winners, Slamdance director Peter Baxter said: “Over the years the Park City Slamdance screenings have become a place for the industry to discover new talent. Salt Lake City has become increasingly important from a public perspective.” [...]
Malaysia Bigfoot Expedition Delayed
A team of twenty scientists from Singapore has been told by government officials to delay a forthcoming expedition to find proof of the unknown hairy hominoids ("Bigfoot," to the media) being reported in the rainforests near Johor, Malaysia. News services are spreading a rather hastily and badly written dispatch today: The Singapore Paranormal Investigators (SPI) told The Straits Times that Malaysian authorities informed requested that they delay the January 21 (sic) trip to hunt for a large, ape-like beast. (Considering that the date of the report is January 28th, this makes no sense. – Loren) The team of 20 planned [...]

Coleman on C2CAM
I’ll be on Coast to Coast AM on January 26, 2005, Thursday night (Friday am on the East Coast), doing a brief update report on “Bigfoot” and related hairy hominoid news. I should come on during the first “news” hour, probably around 10:10 PM Pacific, 1:10 AM Eastern, for thirty minutes or so.
Don Abbott, 70, Has Died
BC Archaeologist Who Examined Bigfoot Tracks in 1967 Don Abbott was the curator of Archaeology at the Royal British Columbia Museum from 1960 until 2000. Abbott had a serious stroke in 2004, which left him paralyzed on one side. He had another major stroke in the spring of 2005 and died a few months afterward on July 28, 2005, at the age of 70. Don Abbott had one of those significant footnote moments important to cryptozoology and hominology. As the first field archaeologist at the Royal British Columbia Museum, Abbott was assigned to go examine the series of Bigfoot tracks [...]
Teams to Search for Orang Dalam
Malaysian media reports today that two teams of researchers will search the wilderness areas for their local “Bigfoot,” which, as I have mentioned before here (1, 2, 3), should more properly be called “Orang Dalam.” These cryptid hairy hominoids have been seen in the Malaysian rainforests of Tanjung Piai, Mersing, Kahang, Endau-Rompin National Park and Kota Tinggi. The recent wave of media interest developed after workers at a fish pond in Kampung Mawai, Kota Tinggi claimed to have seen in November 2005, a three-member family of these creatures, composed of two apparent adults and a child. As to the proposed [...]
