One of the great things about the explosion of media interest in the "Bigfoot" stories out of Malaysia is that the papers have to come up with more and more details to keep the interest level of their articles sharp. And these news items gives us the opportunity to learn more new news, and some old too. This weekend, of course, we’ve seen recycled stories of the last two weeks – expeditions planned, expedition delayed, teams to investigate – so much so that the media is losing track of the chronology. What seems certain is that officials in Malaysia are [...]
Malaysia Bigfoot Expedition Delayed
A team of twenty scientists from Singapore has been told by government officials to delay a forthcoming expedition to find proof of the unknown hairy hominoids ("Bigfoot," to the media) being reported in the rainforests near Johor, Malaysia. News services are spreading a rather hastily and badly written dispatch today: The Singapore Paranormal Investigators (SPI) told The Straits Times that Malaysian authorities informed requested that they delay the January 21 (sic) trip to hunt for a large, ape-like beast. (Considering that the date of the report is January 28th, this makes no sense. – Loren) The team of 20 planned [...]
Get Ready For Yeti
Okay, all of us can see evidence that the Malaysia "Bigfoot" story has exploded into the mainstream when even USA Today decides to cover the story. But then, we also realize it is getting a little long in the tooth when the same newspaper can’t be any more creative than to use the old terrible Ivan Marx photo of a probable man-in-a-suit to illustrate their supposedly overview news item. Outrageous. Those pix from the 1970s have nothing to do with Malaysia, and little to do with the real Bigfoot! I certainly want the Malaysian scientists to succeed and find some [...]

Teams to Search for Orang Dalam
Malaysian media reports today that two teams of researchers will search the wilderness areas for their local “Bigfoot,” which, as I have mentioned before here (1, 2, 3), should more properly be called “Orang Dalam.” These cryptid hairy hominoids have been seen in the Malaysian rainforests of Tanjung Piai, Mersing, Kahang, Endau-Rompin National Park and Kota Tinggi. The recent wave of media interest developed after workers at a fish pond in Kampung Mawai, Kota Tinggi claimed to have seen in November 2005, a three-member family of these creatures, composed of two apparent adults and a child. As to the proposed [...]

Locals Look for Malaysia “Bigfoot”
The Malaya Mail is reporting the logical next step in the unfolding “Bigfoot” story in Malaysia. Local scientists want to beat all the promised international media and expeditions to the punch. What will the locals discover their unknown hairy hominoids actually look like? And how do these cryptids compare to other hairy hominoids seen in the region, as shown in The Field Guide to Bigfoot? “Local experts want priority in the hunt,” proclaims today’s headline. The Kuala Lumpur newspaper on January 23, 2006, notes: Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Animal Science Department head Professor Dr Azahar Kassim said, with numerous Bigfoot sightings [...]
Movies, Music, and Teaching About Hidden Animals
I guess I could discuss the ill whale swimming up the Thames today, and how the crowds are flocking to see it. It does remind me of what might have happened along the New England coast in 1817-1819, during the era of all those Sea Serpent sightings. Or I could talk about the fact that at the Slamdance Film Festival, The Sasquatch Dumpling Gang is being screened, or that some infamous Skunk Ape “hunters” are performing at their own “Everglades Swamp Hop” music festival. But, hey, those stories are merely evidence of the usual cryptozoology entertainment news. (Well, maybe a [...]

Old Bad Yeti Tales
There is old Yeti news beginning to circulate as a new wire service story on January 15-16, 2006. It is all about Sir Edmund Hillary and his 1960 search for the Abominable Snowmen. +++ Harry Trumbore’s drawing of the Himalayan “Yeti,” from the forthcoming The Field Guide to Bigfoot, to be published by Anomalist Books. Copyright 2006, Loren Coleman and Patrick Huyghe. +++ See, for example, the new Australian article, “Hillary’s Abortive Hunt for Yeti Left Sherpa Myth Undisturbed”. They begin with Hillary’s conclusion that the Yeti is a cultural myth, and then they build the case on the retelling [...]
