Not cryptozoological, but considering what’s been discussed today, it seemed worth sharing: Japanese researchers said Sunday [November 4, 2006] a bottlenose dolphin captured last month has an extra set of fins that could be the remains of back legs, providing further evidence ocean-dwelling mammals once lived on land. Fishermen captured the four-finned dolphin off the coast of Wakayama prefecture in western Japan on Oct. 28 and alerted the nearby Taiji Whaling Museum, said museum director Katsuki Hayashi. Fossil remains show dolphins and whales were four-footed land animals about 50 million years ago and share the same common ancestor as hippos [...]
Meldrum and the Media: A Manufactured Mini-Mess
How could a nice guy like Jeff Meldrum (above) get caught in a mini-mess in the press? It happens. An Editorial I wasn’t going to say anything about the article on the work of Dr. Jeff Meldrum. Hey, you all know about it, as mentioned here at Cryptomundo and elsewhere. I was hoping that the tempest in the teapot would go away. But I decided to put to rest some thoughts I have had during the day on the mini-mess in my attempt to move on and get back to the real news. It is the Saturday before a major [...]
Giant Caribbean Snake Sighted
Alsophis antiguae (pictured above) is a harmless grey-brown four-foot long snake, found only on Antigua, a small Caribbean island, thus it carries the common name the Antigua Racer Snake. It is considered the rarest snake in the world, with approximately 200 existing on a small island off the coast of Antigua. But is there a bigger unknown snake on a nearby island? Breaking news seems to indicate as much: The Department of Environment [on the Caribbean's Cayman Islands] said it was called to investigate a report of a large snake in the vicinity of Newlands recently after a resident [...]
Get The Vote Out – For Bigfoot!
On Saturday, November 4, 2006, the CNN Poll was conducting a survey (probably due to the Meldrum publicity) that read: “Do you believe that Bigfoot exists?” Update: The poll has been taken down. See end of this blog for more final thoughts. You can respond “Yes” or “No.” If you would like to “vote,” go to the CNN page (link here) and scroll down to the poll. It’s on the lower right side of the page. At 9:30 am Eastern, it’s still up and probably will be for several more hours. As of when I am posting this, of 21,909 [...]
Loch Ness Monster Sightings: 2006
The famed 1934 photograph by Dr. Kenneth Wilson of something in Loch Ness that automatically lets people know that what we are talking about are the Loch Ness Monsters. Gary Campbell, President of The Official Loch Ness Fan Club, shares this rundown of the sightings of Nessie for 2006, thusfar: 6 October 2006 Nick Thurston and Emma Louise Jones were holidaying at the loch when they saw what they say was Nessie from the Jacobite Queen. “As we sailed along I saw a hump, much like that of a bridge, which was dark brown in colour and was relative to [...]
Mark Bayless, 46, Dies
Mark K. Bayless, 46, who was the moderator of a yahoogroups list on Bigfoot, Bigfoot books, and an active cryptozoology email correspondent to many of us, has passed away. The Snakes of Arkansas Forum, on Friday, November 3, 2006, is posting this news: We are saddened to report that Mark K. Bayless of Berkeley, California, died of complications of diabetes the morning [of November 1, 2006], aged 46. Mark was well known in the monitor community, having overseen the newsletter VaraNews that preceded websites and forums as a source of information about monitor husbandry and biology. An irrepressible Renaissance man, [...]

Pescovitz gives links to a past discussion of the case [Please note the "LC" who left a comment there is not me] where it was pointed out [...]
Loren’s Top 10 Reasons For Cryptozoology Hoaxes
The cropped photograph of the so-called Ameranthropoides loysi, de Loys’ alleged "ape," one of the most sinister hoaxes of all times (see #10 below). My choices for the top ten major reasons that exist for hoaxing in cryptozoology are: 1) fiscal gain (e.g. allegedly the reason behind a hoaxster’s "Coast to Coast AM" radio appearances was so the guest’s broadcast claims of a "captured Bigfoot" video he said was going to post online would encourage "subscribers" to pay a fee to "see" it; the fact he did not deliver did not mean he ever gave the money back, allegedly); 2) [...]
New Mystery Loch Ness Photo
Compare the two photographs taken on the underwater cam within Scotland’s Loch Ness. It is clear that in one the surface of the bottom shows a permanent group of objects to the right and nothing to the left. In the other, a cam image capture, you can see a long object on the bottom, on the left. The difference in time was within minutes, so the object was definitely animate. What is it? An eel? A salmon on the bottom? One of Adrian Shine’s lost sturgeons? A baby Nessie? The tentacle of a giant squid? A seal? An ad man [...]
Extinct Quoll Rediscovered on Mainland?
Click on the Eastern Quoll (Dasyurus viverrrinus) above for a full sized image. "Extinct" marsupial may be alive and well – NSW Rebecca Lang A Hawkesbury (NSW, Australia) resident may have stumbled upon one of the most exciting zoological finds of the decade – a small marsupial previously thought to be extinct on Australia’s mainland. East Kurrajong resident and Hawkesbury Gazette newspaper employee Nicole Palmer was driving along Roberts Creek Road recently when she spotted a couple of unusual-looking animals. "There was two of them. One was smaller. I pulled up and the larger one kept hopping towards the car [...]
