Decatur’s Mystery Photo – Part II

Thanks to many readers’ contributions to the analysis of the latest mystery photograph passed along to Cryptomundo. Please refer to part one’s many comments for more background. Click on image for full-size version Click on this image of a black Burmese named “Patch,” compared to a size 10 shoe, for a larger version. As I wrote to the Eastern Puma Research Network on September 23, 2006, after they expressed a desire to post their as-yet-unreleased felid photograph on Cryptomundo, I would do so, as an exercise in critical cryptozoological thinking, if it was open to comments. But to me what [...]

Mystery Cat Photo: Decatur, Illinois

What kind of feline is this one photographed near Decatur, Illinois? According to the Eastern Puma Research Network (EPRN): “This mystery cryptid animal was caught on film by the wife of an EPRN associate member, who had gone hunting at 0530 hours in November 2004…The animal was filmed at 0547 hours in an area that empties into Sangamon Run…..EPRN knows it is not a black puma nor a housecat due to its features. It was estimated to weigh 40 – 60 pounds. I have my own thoughts, but, first, what do you think?

Maine Mutant Invades Massachusetts?

Mystery animal found roaming WILMINGTON — The town appears to be home to a mystery creature, much like the dog-like animal that haunted Maine residents for months before being hit by a car last month. A Lloyd Road resident called police yesterday morning to report that his son “was almost attacked by what he believes to be a mountain lion” the previous night, according to police logs. The man described the beast as being “large” and “grey/white in color,” the logs note. The Animal Control Officer was notified of the incident, the logs say. Enhanced Mystery Pix

These versions (above) of the enhanced original photograph (below) by brineblank shows support for the "deer" camp. What would other enhancements demonstrate? Or is it a felid, like the caracal above? Or canid, like that dog running across your road? Is this photograph the "Mystery Animal" seen for decades in West Virginia’s Potomac Highlands? This picture was taken by an automatic digital camera set on private property in a 3000 acre wilderness in which no human inhabitants live. It was caught on film on August 8, 2006 at 0700 Hours. Since the original owners do not want to become embroiled [...]

Injun Devils

There are many offensive terms for different kinds of people. The list is long. One phrase that you will find in old records and some modern ones, denoting Native Americans or American Indians, is “Injun.” The exact origins of “Injun” are lost in time, but dictionaries will tell you that the word seems to have surfaced in 1805-1815, as a variation of “Indian,” through assibilation (the act of changing a name by pronouncing it with a hissing or whistling sound). Scholarly sources even compare “Injun” to what happened in 1875-1880, to those who settled in Louisiana and Maine, descended from [...]

French Police Hunt Mystery Black Felid

August 14, 2006 Boulogne-sur-mer, France • Scores of policemen, some armed with shotguns, are hunting a mysterious big black feline spotted in northern France, officers said. The operation was launched Wednesday near the town of Boulogne-sur-Mer after several panicked people first raised the alarm on seeing what they described as a “panther” about 1.2 metres long on a popular beach. Some 80 officers and a helicopter were immediately deployed on a search, and the beach was closed for a day, but they failed to find their quarry. Belgian tourists and residents then reported seeing the black beast on Friday, and [...]

Indiana’s August 1948 Varmints

All this month, the newspaper of Richmond, Indiana, the Palladium-Item has been re-posting archival articles from 60 years ago about the sightings of “Varmints” there. Contemporary readers seem to have at first thought the reporters back then were talking about Bigfoot, but, of course, it was mystery cats that were being remembered. It is these same Varmints that cryptozoologists such as myself and Minnesota researcher Mark A. Hall had written about thirty years ago. In fact, I first detailed the Varmints in the pages of Creatures of the Outer Edge in 1978. These accounts capture the essence of the [...]
