Did a young girl from a pioneering Fiordland family have the last human encounter with a moa? It has gone down in history as one of the most puzzling rare-bird sightings and it happened in the remote south-west corner of New Zealand. What was the big blue bird that pioneer Alice McKenzie saw at Martins Bay, 30km north of Milford Sound, in 1880? Experts are still debating nearly 130 years later. Did a species of moa, such as the little bush moa, survive human predation and live on in the Fiordland wilderness 400 years after they were thought to be [...]
Death by Sea Serpent?
In response to my “Sea Serpent Snatching?” blog, cryptozoologist Matt Bille, author of 2006′s Shadows of Existence, sent along a comment. He mentioned that there has been only one known case of the possible killing of humans by a Sea Serpent. I asked Matt to expand on this, and submit a guest blog on the account. He agreed and you will find his welcome overview of the incident below. Matt with a friend. Matt Bille’s contribution on this intriguing Sea Serpent case follows. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Death by Sea Serpent? By Matt Bille In the modern history of “sea serpents,” we have [...]
Ropen Expedition ‘07
Click on the Ropen for a larger version. No scale was given for this drawing. As we have learned, the “Destination Truth” team is on a filming trek in Asia. Here is another insight into the expedition’s point-of-view and cryptid focus as they pursue the Ropen in Papua New Guinea: I was interviewed by Neil Mandt a few weeks ago as he was preparing for the expedition (this kind of excursion should only be done after consulting with someone who has been in Papua New Guinea, searching for the Ropen and/or eyewitnesses). At first, suspicious – the “Fi” of “Sci-Fi [...]
Lake Cryptid Video
Here is the Norwegian so-called “Sea Serpent” (apparently a Lake Monster?) video footage. Please see the previous post here for the background details. What do you think?
Dragons on NPR
Click on image for full size version Rick Kleffel, Fortean and editor of The Agony Column, has broadcast an audio report on National Public Radio (NPR) about dragons. It can now be accessed for listening by clicking here on “Dragons Get a Modern Image Makeover.” The description of the program notes: All Things Considered, January 27, 2007 · Old maps bore the scary legend “here there be dragons.” These days dragons aren’t so scary. In countless books and movies, they’re portrayed as loving companions to the humans that ride them. I’ve added visuals here for Cryptomundo readers so you’ll have [...]
SF Sea Serpent Video
This illustration (above) from the early 1800s’ sighting of a Sea Serpent off the coast of New England is compared with a video capture (below) from the Clarks’ 2004 Sea Serpent videotape taken off of California. Sea serpent? Dolphins? Water birds? The Clarks have done a great deal to secure the analysis of their video. Bob and Bill Clark have received and are now sharing stabilized portions of their San Francisco Bay sea serpent video. (An uplink will be shared here if a format for the internet if available.) Please find here the link to their pdf attachment which contains [...]
New Wounded Knee Sightings
The Oglala Sioux Pine Ridge Reservation was the site last year of several close encounters with what appeared to be a large Bigfoot (often called “Big Man”). There’s news from sources at Wounded Knee, a few miles from Pine Ridge, that a new wave of activity has begun. It is my understanding there have been finds of footprints in freshly fallen snow, and at least five sightings describing a 7-8 ft tall, thick hairy man with no face and long hair as it would sway with the wind. One reported Bigfoot took a special interest in a pole yard light [...]
Norwegian Lake Monster
This picture is taken at a distance of about 20 metres at the Snaasa lake near Steinkjer i North Troendelag. (Photo: Einar Johannes Sandnes ) In Sweden and Norwary, sometimes, “sea serpent” is a term used for lake monsters. Sea serpent in Snaasa lake Is this a sea serpent? Einar Johannes Sandnes wonders if it really was a sea serpent that he saw popping its head out of the lake. What do you think? By David Brændeland Could this be a sea serpent? The creature that stuck its head out of Snaasa lake managed to rattle Einar Johannes Sandnes. It [...]
What Is A New Species?
This is the latest new mammal discovered in Europe, Mus cypriacus or the Cypriot mouse, which was described last year in the journal Zootaxa. How does one determine that a new species has been discovered? How is it that one location has one species of salamander and thirty years later there are said to be many new species in that area? From where do all the new species come? The Naung Mung Scimitar-Babbler (Jabouilleia naungmungensis) was discovered in the pre-montane rainforests of northern Myanmar (Burma) in 2005. Their discovery, however, was not announced until 2006. It is a unique new [...]
New Details About “Wild Man”
Fox News’ Nick Meo has written an article about the new search for the “Wild Man” seen with the “feral woman.” The following is the new info in that piece: Villagers celebrating the return of a young woman 18 years after she disappeared into the jungle are planning to hunt the “wild man” who may have kidnapped and held her captive. The naked and long-haired man was spotted, apparently armed with a sword, along with the woman as they tried to steal food in a remote province in northeast Cambodia. The villagers chased them both, catching her, but reported that [...]
