Reality Check: Behind The Lost World Hype

Do you know where the Foja Mountains are? Most people don’t. And are there really "hundreds of new species" discovered? Bruce Beehler of the U.S. organization Conservation International and Indonesian Institute of Sciences reportedly told the BBC: "It’s a beautiful, untouched, unpopulated forest. We found dozens, if not hundreds, of new species." The attention to the new "Lost World" in Indonesia is all over the media, as mentioned earlier here on Cryptomundo. But what’s the reality behind the headlines? Photographs of two rare but not "new" species – the long-beaked echidna and the golden-mantled tree kangeroo; Conservation International. Not to [...]

Lost Worlds in New Guinea and Madagascar

The discovery of a "Lost World" in New Guinea is the breaking story of the day. I guess you just never can tell what you’re find if you look on the upper slopes of the Foja Mountains, in the easternmost and least explored province of western New Guinea, humm? Due to a technical breakdown here last night when Cryptomundo went offline, I wasn’t able to post on this exciting development. In the meantime, I see this morning, the internet is screaming about the "hundreds of species" found. One of the best items on the findings is at Boing Boing; they [...]

Stegosaur in Cambodia?

What real evidence exists for dinosaurs having survived into more contemporary times? What are we to make of the carving of a Stegosaur (Stegosaur stenops) on an ancient Cambodian temple at Angkor Wat? Click image for full-size version This carving is now being shown to tourists, proclaiming it is a dinosaur. Such a situation, thusfar, has only caused a few comments online, at such locations as the Unexplained Earth webpage last summer, as well as other sites. But all this appears to be changing, with more and more attention to this item. For example, there is new talk of this [...]

Mokele-mbembe Expedition Update

Cryptomundo CryptoZoo News Exclusive The exploratory Milt Marcy Mokele-mbembe Expedition has returned. The trek to the Cameroon was made in preparation for a longer, full-scale effort in search of Mokele-mbembe, at the beginning of 2007. Drawings of Mokele-mbembe by Bill Rebsamen, used with permission. Here’s Bill Gibbons’ first report from the group just returned from Africa: Milt Marcy is in good shape given all the travel time and tough conditions (the insect problem was awful and his feet are swollen up from all the bites). But he sounded encouraged and in good spirits. He took a boat with him (11ft [...]

“Beast of Balbirnie” Cast Update

Earlier here, CryptoZoo News mentioned the Scottish footcast found and declared authentic by the authorities. Several people have asked for us to publish the photograph of it. So here it is, with the official comparative examples of other casts: Photo A: "Beast of Balbirnie" cast Photo B: Balbirnie cast (top), captive puma (right), dog (bottom), leopard (left) Credit: BBC News By the way, in yesterday’s press reports, Paul Westwood was quoted by the media as disagreeing with the findings that the Beast of Balbirnie cast is a leopard’s. I asked Paul what he really said and feels about the cast. [...]

Minnesota Mystery Cat Captured

Sometimes cryptids are captured. Credit for video capture (no pun intended) from KSTP-TV. The recent sightings of a mystery cat in a Willmar, Minnesota neighborhood have resulted in the capture of a mountain lion, yesterday, on the first of February 2006. Surprise, surprise. It is a real animal. It was not a phantom or a figment of people’s imagination. The female mountain lion, puma, cougar, or whatever American moniker you want to use, officials say, weighs about 80 pounds and is believed to be 12 to 18 months old. But more importantly, the government line is reflected in the day [...]

Beast of Balbirnie

Tracks of a black leopard or melanistic panther in Scotland, at first dismissed by police as those of a St. Bernard dog, have been confirmed as a large feline’s. Scottish law enforcement authorities, on the evening of February 1st, released a statement noting they feel a black leopard (the size of a collie) is roaming near a Scottish town. As the Glasgow Herald is reporting in their February 2nd issue: A plaster cast of a paw print made following a sighting of the so-called “Beast of Balbirnie” in October [2005] has been studied by zoologists. The large, dark-coloured animal has [...]
