There are various kinds of unknown hairy hominoids seen throughout the world. Unfortunately, despite this diversity, “Bigfoot” has become a universal label for any upright hairy humanlike unknown species. Using the new name “Johor Hominid” makes sense, in an attempt to sort through the confusion. But another wrinkle is behavioral evidence that comes out in visual interpretations. What image, in the vacuum of these reported photographs, of the Johor Hominid will dominate? Will it be of a peaceful, yet-to-be discovered, new species, as here portrayed by the extreme example of the Tropi in Skullduggery… or…the Boar Killer as imagined in [...]

Cryptozoologist of the Day: Jesse Dye
My Cryptomundo nod of the day goes to Mr. Jesse Dye of Kentucky, for his positive reinforcement of the true nature of cryptozoology. In an article written by Howard McEwen, with photographyby Ernest Coleman (no relation), and published on Sunday, July 16, 2006, in The Enquirer of Cincinnati, mention is made of the re-naming of a lake on the campus of Northern Kentucky University. The body of water has been called “Lake Inferior” for years. But now, in the midst of a privately funded $2.4 million renovation, the alumni association thought that a more appropriate name for the large pond [...]
Johor Photos Promoted For Funding?
According to a new article in the Malaysian newspaper, The New Straits Times, the ultimate motive of all of the recent news about the launch of the Johor Hominid website may have been revealed: a call for funding. R. Sittamparam, writing in an article on July 15th, notes that Vincent Chow’s and Sean Ang’s website is petitioning UNESCO for “world heritage status.” The news writer found that the website has …started a signature campaign among Malaysians and the international community to support the petition, which will also be sent to the Government. The petition states that the discovery of close-up [...]
1934’s Murderous Monster Marsupial
Sometimes the strangest things you hear about in cryptozoology catch up with physical evidence years later. Take, for instance, Killer Kangaroos. No, I’m not talking about the Mystery Kangaroos that punched out the Chicago police in the 1970s. I’m thinking, instead, about the Killer Kangaroo of 1934. This week saw news out of Australia that “killer kangaroos,” “demon ducks of doom,” and eighteen other previously unknown species had been discovered by paleontologists at a dig site in Queensland, northern Australia. The new animals’ tags immediately made me think of the names I’d coined or heard before in cryptozoology. Who couldn’t [...]

Them! and Skullduggery: The Bridge to Johor
Sometimes I start one place, go down a side road, end up elsewhere, and find my way back to say goodbye. The 1950s-1960s movie and television character actor Christian Drake, who played Trooper Ed Blackburn in the classic 1954 film Them!, has died at the age of 82. Is it a coincidence that I just flipped on my television to catch the last hour of this movie on cable? Bizarre! The film Them! was directed by Gordon Douglas, who would later be the director for Skullduggery, a fascinating 1970 cryptozoology film about the Tropi (pictured below), bipedal hairy hominoids, which [...]
Malaysia Media Promotes Web Mania
According to the Malaysia Star of Thursday July 13, 2006′s article, “Big draw for Bigfoot site,” it’s all about the numbers first, and the hominids second. In the piece by Nelson Benjamin of The Star, dateline Johor Baru, the reporter writes: A website dedicated to the Malaysian version of Bigfoot has created a buzz among enthusiasts of the enigmatic creature worldwide. The site (www.johorhominid.org), which has sketches of a ape-like beast and a hairy paw, has attracted some 16,000 hits. Vincent Chow, a Johor branch member of the Malaysian Nature Society, one of the two persons who developed the website, said [...]
Help Wanted
It looks like there’s been some candidates, so this search is over, at The Anomalist, for now. Thank you. However, in a few days, I may be more formally asking for unpaid interns or volunteers to assist me with the next and future phases of the Portland, Maine-based International Cryptozoology Museum, in which you can have a chance to work closely with me. In the meantime, if you are a Maine-located go-getter, please write me at lcoleman at maine.rr.com to begin an email exchange about this.
“White-Trash Werewolf Smorgasbord”
Yes, that quoted phrase is the subsection title that columnist Melanie Conklin of the Wisconsin State Journal of Madison, Wisconsin, employs in her little segment on the The Beast of Bray Road. It is not often that you see a modern newspaper writer employing what, in essence, is a racial slur with a mention about cryptozoology. But there it is. Actually, to be specific, Conklin is quoting Linda Godfrey who is rather upset these days. Here is what Melanie Conklin wrote on July 12th, even mentioning this humble blog site along the way: ‘White-trash werewolf smorgasbord’ If you attend Wisconsin [...]
