The Chinese news source Xinhua is announcing on Thursday, June 19, 2008, the confirmed discovery of a new species of bird, the Nonggang babbler or Stachyris nonggangensis. It has a white crescent-shaped patch behind the ear and some grayish-brown spots on the white throat. Apart from that, it’s dark brown all over. It prefers to walk, flying only when frightened. It often feeds on worms and insects in the gaps between rocks. Meet the new species of bird discovered by Chinese ornithologists on a small patch of limestone rainforest on the Sino-Vietnamese border. No ornithologist had sighted the myna-sized bird [...]
Cryptic Chickens
For those that have never been to a scholarly academic meeting and have wondered what their presentations are like, here’s an example: Thanks to Darren Naish. Ultimate credit goes to Doug Zongker who presented the above at the AAAS, February 16, 2007.
Ohio's Grassmen
Thank goodness the ghosts are gone. It’s back to monsters this evening folks, so let’s celebrate. Tonight’s “MonsterQuest” is about the “Ohio Grassman,” one of the local names for the Eastern Bigfoot-types reported in this Midwestern state, a bona-fide cryptid. It also features good guy, well-known Ohio Bigfoot conference organizer and Cleveland Indians fan Don Keating. Don Keating describes a plaster casting he has in his collection from early 1991 for the History Channel’s program “MonsterQuest.” The casting is from a series of five footprints discovered near Newcomerstown. Crazy Crocs: OH, VA, MD, & MI
The Sheriff decided to carry the photo of the Saltville gator to show folks, because no one believed him. More “crazy crocs” have made their way into mini-media mentions. The “crocs” is shorthand for “crocodilians,” of course, and thus includes alligators, crocodiles, gharials, caimans, and kin. Ohio On Monday, June 16, 2008, an “urban alligator,” as it was cutely called by Channel 19 Action News, was spotted resting on a south Columbus, Ohio, street, under a sports utility vehicle (SUV) owned by the Edwards family. Police were called and they found an American alligator, about 3 1/2 feet long, next [...]
What Is Bigfoot?
Of the routine and infrequent fossil candidates submitted for consideration as to the origins of Bigfoot/Sasquatch, which one is your favorite? I begin with the premise that this unknown, yet-to-be-verified, hairy bipedal hominoid is an actual biological species. Getting beyond the argument of whether or not Bigfoot exists, what do you think might be the fossil candidate best matching the sightings and evidence of the classic Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot, Patty, and the specimens seen during encounters aligned with her, from the Pacific Northwest of the USA and Canada? The reconstructions of William Munns give some new views of how these fossil [...]
India’s Mande Barung
In the US it’s known as Bigfoot, in Canada as Sasquatch, in Brazil as Mapinguary, in Australia as a Yowie, in Indonesia as Sajarang Gigi and, most famously of all, in Nepal as a Yeti. The little known Indian version of this legendary ape-like creature is called Mande Barung – or forest man – and is reputed to live in the remote West Garo hills of the north-eastern state of Meghalaya. I was invited by passionate yeti believer Dipu Marak to travel throughout the area to hear for myself what he says is compelling evidence of the existence of a [...]
SFx Legend Stan Winston, 62, Dies
Intriguing that today, of all days, I should update a posting on a special effects genius, the late John Chambers. Now word comes in another great in the field, Stan Winston (above), 62, passed away, late Sunday, June 15, 2008, in Los Angeles, California. He died following a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma. “Stan died peacefully at home surrounded by family,” a spokeswoman said. His work is familiar to you. Winston created the title characters in Iron Man, The Terminator, Pumpkinhead, Predator, Aliens, as well as the monsters in Monster Squad, and the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park. He worked on [...]
Myakka, Masks, and John Chambers
It all began with a December 22, 2000, letter signed “God Bless. I prefer to remain anonymous,” mailed to the Sarasota (Florida) Sheriff’s Department.
Borneo Big Footprints: Jokes?
Editorial Cartoon: “Bigfoot in Sarawak” posted by Kher Cheng Guan. The giant footprints found in a fishing village in Daro [Borneo] are a fake. “It’s man-made and a hoax,” Sarawak Museum anthropologist Dr. Charles Leh said yesterday while dismissing news reports that the two sets of footprints found in a village in Mukah division were those of “Bigfoot”, an ape-like creature said to be found in North America. He said the hoax may be an attempt to attract people to Daro. Leh, who is also the assistant director of the museum, based his opinion on an analysis of the published [...]
