On the Track With William Dranginis
Thirteen years ago, William Dranginis saw Bigfoot. Fifty grand, a van, and a camera in a log later, the quest continues. William Dranginis knows what you’re thinking, so maybe it’s best to get a few things straight right from the start. He’s not crazy, delusional, some lunatic on the fringe. For the most part, he’s your average suburban family man. Lives on a quiet street in Manassas. Has a great wife and two daughters; just became a grandfather. Has a good job designing surveillance equipment for the Windermere Group, an Annapolis-based technology firm that does contract work for the government. [...]
Third Green Warning: Cryptid Reptile Loose
The lay of the land near Stivers Lagoon. Watch out for the water hazards on the nearby golf course. Another report of a huge, unidentified reptile? Let’s put the latest sightings in their NoCal context. The reptile spotted by two people at a Fremont, California, golf course last week remains at large, and there are no plans to look for it again unless someone else sees it, officials said. A week after initially being alerted to a supposed 3-foot-long reptile – possibly an abandoned illegal pet caiman – in the water near the third green at Fremont Park Golf Center, [...]
eBay’s $150K Bigfoot Hunter Id’ed
The eBay Bigfoot hunter has been identified. The $150,000 man first discussed at Boing Boing yesterday can be more fully revealed here today. TPeterson6969 is Tim Peterson, the owner of Hawk Creek Taxidermy in Maynard, Minnesota. The business address of Hawk Creek Taxidermy & Archery is technically 12640 890 St. Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55401 , a mere 25.4 miles from Young America. This is public information, so I’m not sharing data that is private. Two of his 320 area code telephone numbers are public info too, but I won’t be posting those. When asked for a comment for an interview, [...]
When Cryptozoologists Die
Bill Rebsamen’s tribute to Scott Norman, who passed away suddenly earlier in 2008. This may be a difficult essay for you to read, but this is a subject we all have ignored for a long time. There is a darker side that occurs after the obituaries and remembrances are written. What happens after the tributes are published? Why have we avoided the obvious, and watched legacies vanish? There are some things I’ve got to say. We shall pick up an existence by its frogs. Wise men have tried other ways. They have tried to understand our state of being, by [...]
Bigfoot? Lost Hiker’s “Monkey” Sighting
I saw this one coming. A chimpanzee escapes near the San Bernardino Mountains, California, and then the media finds itself being more open to publishing sightings of hairy primates in the area. It is happening. Of course, the media and the caregivers to Moe, the chimp escapee, are divided about whether they want these mystery sightings to be “their” ape or not. So we see confused news items, such as the following one. Here we go again. You’ve been here before. A chimp among the nudist but not “their” chimp. Ape footprints but not “their” chimp’s footprints. This leaves us [...]
Hire Me To Find Bigfoot For $150,000!
Yes, you can sign up and bid on an eBay auction for a Bigfoot hunter’s services! David Pescovitz over at Boing Boing has alerted me to a unique type of auction going on over at eBay. There’s a hunter who is selling his/her services to hunt “Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti,” and the person “will search for and find” Sasquatch for a price. So writes eBay user TPeterson6969 (those numbers aren’t sexual references, are they?). As David says, “Starting bid for his or her services is $150,000.” This Bigfooter says, “I have been a big game hunter nearly all of my life [...]
No Trunks, Says Palaeontologist
In my never-ending quest to give both sides of various intellectually stimulating issues, here is part two of Monday’s discussion on whether or not Mokele-Mbembe, if discovered, might be found to have a trunk. University of Portsmouth vertebrate palaeontologist and science writer Darren Naish (above) has a contrary opinion to that of the one highlighted here by reconstruction artist Bill Munns yesterday, on whether or not trunks existed on sauropods and a variety of other fossil animals. For the sauropods, Naish emails me this comment about Munns’ images (one, shown above) and the pro-trunk theory: “Very cool. But the palaeontological [...]
African Lion Hunt Ends
Crews called off the search for an African lion in a rural part of El Paso County, Colorado, late Monday afternoon (July 14, 2008), believing that the animal in question may just have been a big dog. But they don’t know. Three individuals reported an African lion, complete with mane and brush on the long tail. One official was quoted as saying the tracks were not cougar, not dog, but large felid tracks. A red mane was seen. And then there is the cellphone image capture. Here are various renderings of the photograph of the Mystery Animal: Will this be [...]
New Mouse Lemur Discovered
This is an illustration of different species of endemic mouse lemurs (Microcebus) occurring in the western half of Madagascar. Microcebus are the world’s smallest living primates and some species are limited to small geographic areas, which is known as micro-endemism.
