A new article out of Malaysia betrays the underlying war between newspapers in the country over who "owns" the Johor Bigfoot story. Today’s editions of The Star are subtle in how they are using quotations and paraphrases from government officials to distance themselves from Vincent Chow, new books, and possible photographs of the Mawas. Here’s the back story. Two newspapers, The New Straits Times and The Star, have been in the forefront of the developing story and reporting of the "Bigfoot" sightings since December 2005. Now a change in coverage and treatment has been clearly demonstrated by The Star today, [...]
Homo floresiensis Supporter’s Challenge
One of the arguments from the Homo floresiensis debunkers (such as from Dr. Jacob pictured here) has been that the little-people are merely representatives of the local people and/or microcephalics in the local population. Here’s a new challenge from Peter Brown, shown photographing Homo floresiensis (LB1) below, who speaks directly to these critics, via Cryptomundo: "For those wanting to know more about modern people on Flores, Teku Jacob has a number of mesolithic skeletons from Liang Bua (excavated more than 20 years ago) in his laboratory. You would think that if modern humans on Flores had the same features as [...]
Cryptid Hunting: What to Bring Along?
Making decisions about what you want and need to bring along on your next cryptid-seeking outing is not just about what you have available to throw in the back of the pick-up anymore. What do you take along and recommend to others? Carrying a good camera, so you can take pictures like this great one by Rick Noll, of hair caught on a broken branch, posted earlier on Cryptomundo, is a no-brainer. But let’s put some thought behind the other things to bring on your excursion, too. Steven Titchenell, organizer of the WVBIG (West Virginia Bigfoot Investigations Group) Expedition [...]
Cannes 2006: The Host
A special little movie has been invited to screen at the Cannes 2006 Director’s Fortnight that is of interest to Cryptomundo. It is entitled The Host (Gue Mool), and directed by Bong Joon-ho, 37, of South Korea. Bae Doona, 27, model-turned-actress (above), who has had strong parts and gotten rave reviews, stars, along with lead David Joseph Anselmo. Perhaps under-whelming in its initial description, the Hollywood Reporter called The Host “a sci-fi horror about a mutant rising from Seoul’s Han river…full of special effects.” But then noted it has been described by Pere as “an auteur film and a very [...]
Where Does Cryptozoology Live?
Where do cryptozoologists live? Well, all over, of course. Where does cryptozoology live? If cryptozoology is the study of unknown animals, and one way that people are studying the cryptids is by reading Cryptomundo, part of the answer lies in the statistics revealed in the hits to our site. While we don’t keep personalized information, like the NSA or the CIA might, there are some basic info that is available on what countries are checking in to Cryptomundo. Where are you from? Millions of people, some days, visit here, to read about the latest in cryptozoology. Some postings can get [...]
Mysterious Mizoram Mammal Sighted
Mizoram is a state in northeastern India, bordering Myanmar and Bangladesh, of nearly 900,000 people, with the the second highest rate of literacy (88%) among all the states of India, after Kerala. Mizaram is also the home of the mysterious Shinlung who believe themselves to be ethnically Jewish, descendants of one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Reports out of Mizoram today are sweeping the state that giant "rat-like creatures" has been sighted there and have not been able to be captured yet. Officials have offered cash rewards to local villagers who kill or capture alive the "big rat-like creatures" [...]
Cryptozoology Is Not About Faith
Click image for full-size version My friend and Cryptomundo colleague, British Columbian John Kirk writes on this blog today, “Bracing For Disappointment” that was itself a disappointment to read. I think it speaks to the erosion of natural history adventure and the rise of cynicism that has begun to infect our field. Speaking specifically about the potential and possibilities of the Vincent Chow revelations in the as-yet-to-be-released Malaysian photos of Mawas, Kirk writes that “given the flops as far as earthshaking cryptid footage and photos of the past are concerned, I do not have much faith that they will be [...]
Peter Brown on Hobbits, Ebu Gogo, and Bigfoot
Peter Brown has spoken before of the interrelationship between the media-named "Hobbits," Flores’ ebu gogo, and Bigfoot. In an interview for Scientific American in 2004, the discoverer of Homo floresiensis was asked, Certainly by the time of LB1, people had well-developed language and oral traditions. Might encounters with humans like LB1 and other, unknown, island forms be the source of mythologies that are so widespread in the world today involving very tiny people and very large people? Brown’s reply: You pick a country and there’s either large Bigfoot and Yetis, or small leprechauns and Yowies, depending on which part of [...]
Hobbit Discoverer Denounces Debunking
Reacting strongly to the latest round of attacks on Homo floresiensis being conducted more in the media than in reasoned reality, Peter Brown, one of the primary researchers of the new species has told Cryptomundo: “Some people see exactly what they want to see, for a variety of reasons.” Distracters, the media, and the debunkers in this current onslaught against the discovery are completely ignoring the evidence of the possibly nine Homo floresiensis individuals discovered at the site. “There are no modern humans with the postcranial dimensions of Homo floresiensis and the second mandible is well outside the range of [...]
