Bigfoot Books Burns: Total Loss

0-2

Bigfoot Books was an open general stock used bookstore 1.5 miles east of downtown Willow Creek, California. I carefully use the past tense because Steven Streufert, the owner, is sharing that early in September 2023, a fire there destroyed his business. It is a total loss. (Photo above.)

On Friday, of Labor Day Weekend, September 1, 2023, the Bigfoot Books’ fire burned or ruined the entire remaining inventory, which was being sold off.

Because Steven has been in shock, he only recently shared the news as a friend posted a Go-Fund-Me to assistance Steven to get him back on his feet.

The store had been around for years, and was a stopping point for visitors to Willow Creek. Photographs below are all pre-fire.

Here’s what Steven has written, thus far.

“Well, I guess I need to mention this … the bookstore burned. I was found unconscious on the front porch, surrounded in plumes of smoke and with flames encroaching. I’m lucky the CHP guy spotted me from the highway. This was a couple of weeks ago now. I lost pretty much everything, and wasn’t even wearing shoes when they stuck me into the ambulance.”

Steven was living at the bookstore. Why?

“I had to move out of the cabin. They wanted to sell it, and I couldn’t really pay the rent post-Pandemic. So I’d really downsized, but a lot of personal stuff was stashed in there [at the bookstore], waiting for the next stage.”

“Uninjured, uninsured, but alive.

“The store inventory was mostly gone already, as I was getting to close up the shop, but a lot of good books still burned. Luckily, most of the Bigfoot stuff had found new homes.”

And finally…

“The store cat is doing OK, too.”
