Tyler McPhee’s The Whole Picture

Artists and museum exhibitors share a great deal in common: a love of visual expression, a knack for creating works that attract a bit of conjecture, and a sense of adventure in exploring feelings stirred up by merely looking at something.

An artist with an interest in Bigfoot use to be a rare thing, but the population is growing. Tyler McPhee’s exhibition now showing in Maine, demonstrates that among young art students, there is a expanding form of educational imagery for hominology.

Ending in a few days, McPhee’s installation In Search of… continues at the Center for Contemporary Art in Rockport, Maine, through the 4th of October 2008. He has given permission for me to share photographs of his exhibit.

Tyler McPhee details and explains what you see below:

“The original version of In Search of… (an installation) was set up in a garage in Orono for about a week. The piece was then brought to the Center for Contemporary Art in Rockport for their Biennial. My work The Whole Picture (an expanded model of the famed frame from the Patterson-Gimlin footage) was supposed to be in the show but they asked if I wanted to use the space in the photos. I agreed on the condition I could expand to be more of the museum I did previously. So, while their literature keeps it as The Whole Picture, I refer to it as In Search of….”

The Center for Contemporary Art website with directions and operating hours can be found here.

Tyler McPhee is a graduate sculpture student at Syracuse University, and his website and other work can be found here (which also has images of In Search of… in its original 2007 garage installation form).

If you can’t make it to Rockport, I hope you enjoy these images of McPhee’s work.

I like the idea that one of the television monitors has been placed on a Coleman cooler. :-)
