Cosimo Celebrates Opening of the New International Cryptozoology Museum
NEW YORK, NY – Cosimo, a specialty book publisher in New York, joins in celebrating the recent opening of the new International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine by releasing cryptozoology classic books selected by its museum curator, leading cryptozoologist, and author Loren Coleman.
The phrase “cryptozoology,” a subdivision of zoology, which studies the phenomenon of hidden animals, was coined by the zoologist Ivan T. Sanderson in the 1930’s and appears in his 1961 classic Abominable Snowmen: Legend Come to Life. The search for hidden animals is an age-old phenomenon that includes the search for creatures such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, but also the giant panda, the okapi, and the Komodo dragon. The discovery of the latter three animals in the 20th century showed that hidden animals aren’t merely figments of the imagination.
The new cryptozoology museum, the first of its kind in the world, includes exhibits on the discoveries of “living fossils,” and special drawings and sculptures by leading cryptozoological artists. Loren Coleman, the museum curator, believes that the opening of this new museum is indicative of the growing popularity of cryptozoology, saying:
“…(since) you had…the ‘X-Files’ using the word cryptozoology for the first time on TV,…it’s over the years becoming a subject of interest and a part of our culture.”
Cosimo has partnered with Loren Coleman to publish rare and unique classic cryptozoological texts, which are selected by Coleman and include informative introductions by him in each of the over twenty editions of this growing collection. These classics include editions such as aforementioned Abominable Snowmen by Ivan Sanderson, The Great Sea Serpent by Anton Oudemans, The Book of Werewolves by Sabine Baring-Gould, Mythical Monsters by Charles Gould and many others. Many of these classics are available at the museum, and also at online bookstores.
